sidewinder Posted January 6, 2013 Report Posted January 6, 2013 Bobby Hutcherson 'Happenings' (BN NY USA, stereo) This is one BN title where the stereo is a safer bet than the mono (distortion on every copy I've heard). Quote

Interesting line up indeed but hefty price tag to europe I didn't take to the 'year of the boar' release much and was underwhelmed by that line-up live but anything with Adasiewicsz is worth my attention I find Quote

I checked out the price. At £26 or so I wonder how many will make their way across the pond. I enjoyed Year of the Boar FWIW. Quote

Interesting line up indeed but hefty price tag to europe I didn't take to the 'year of the boar' release much and was underwhelmed by that line-up live but anything with Adasiewicsz is worth my attention I find It's good, but not "forceful" music in the way that The Thing or even Atomic are. Some of it is almost in the vein of 'post-rock' Chicago stuff. The sound and pressing/presentation is nice, though. I noticed that on the website it says "350 copies" but mine is signed/numbered "433/500." Now: Steve Lacy - Sideways - (Roaratorio) Quote

jeffcrom Posted January 7, 2013 Report Posted January 7, 2013 Phil Sunkel's Jazz Band (ABC Paramount). A really wonderful "sleeper" of an album from 1956 - never released on CD, to my knowledge, but apparently available as a download (without the kinda stupid, kinda great cover). Sunkel was one of those cool-ish bebop trumpeters like Don Joseph or Tony Fruscella; here he leads a small big band (four brass, three saxes, and three rhythm) in a program he mostly wrote himself. There are no big names, but most folks would recognize a few of the musicians. Imaginative, different, and excellent. Quote
