robertoart
Nope. The "Narada" was bestowed upon him by Swami Satchidananda. Glad you dig the LP - was honored to write the text for that one. Someone should have told the Swami it was already taken

jazzbo
That's a great session. Wow, Bechet is sounding as big as a house on this RVG mastered "Giants of Traditional Jazz."
Clunky
Don Elliott- A Musical Offering (HMV) mint UK pressing of this hardly revolutionary session arranged by Quincy Jones. Pleasant Sunday morning chamber jazz with a west coast vibe. Quite nice but not worth big money. listening to this mellow session again. It's really not bad, it's certainly polite with touches of muscular flute playing and even bounce to most of the arrangements. Doesn't sound like a typical Quincy Jones date to my untutored ears. This is available on Catalan CD imprint combined with another Elliott session. Anyone else heard this ?
jazzbo
Now continuing on my Wild Bill Davison kick, with the added benefits of lots of Pee Wee Russell. Wild Bill Davison "That's A-Plenty" Commodore
The Magnificent Goldberg
A bunch of LPs from PeteB turned up this morning. What with water being intermittently cut off for the last couple of days, I only just managed to get to hear them now. Various Artists - Live at the Apollo 1944-1947 - Everybody's Phew! Some cracking playing from a bunch of great big bands, and even the Duke and Basie are overshadowed by Erskine Hawkins! Erskine Hawkins - Swingin' in Harlem - Vocalion (Tax, Sweden) Very nice early sessions from 1936-38. Never heard any of this stuff before. Lionel Hampton & his orchestra - 1948 - Alamac Live broadcast stuff with the band veering towards, and sometimes leaping into, bebop. Fats Navarro & Benny Bailey to blame Arnett Cobb - Arnett Cobb is back - Progressive Every bit as good as you think it should be. MG

Glad you dig the LP - was honored to write the text for that one. Someone should have told the Swami it was already taken Ha! Well, in all seriousness, it means something like "giver of musical wisdom" and, like Pandit (Vedic high scholar) and other superlative designations, can be bestowed on more than one person. Michael Walden seems to think that he "owns" it, you're right about that.

danasgoodstuff
Pete LaRoca 'Turkish Women at the Bath' (Douglas reissue) Sounds like it was recorded in the toilets Recorded in a Turkish bath? Indeed - the sound is very murky, sort of muffled by the primeval steamy pea-soup. They obviously had other things on their minds...

jazztrain
Ironcially, I aired the Mutt Carey session (originally on Century) from this album yesterday afternoon. The last three selections on Side A in this reissue are all Scott Joplin compositions but are credited on the label to A.A. Smith, which turns out to be a pseudonym for Herman Lubinsky.
