jeffcrom
James Blood Ulmer - Tales of Captain Black (Artists House). Enjoying the full bookleted experience for the first time ever - thanks, JSngry. JSngry
Jazz at the Philharmonic - In Europe, Vol. 1 (Verve stereo). I like this one because Benny Carter and Cannonball Adderley are on the same stage. I like that one because on "All the Things You Are", Coleman Hawkins tricks out the changes more than Stan Getz or even Don Byas, and does so in the most understated yet emphatic fashion imaginable, kinda like, yeah, ok, y'all do all that, here's what I got. Hey, how 'bout that, eh? How did THAT happen? Hmmm. The older I get, the more I appreciate just what an "Ok, you want to fuck with me? Bring it, then! (smirk chuckle digestive fluids beging flowing)" guy Coleman Hawkins was, and why he needed to be that way the older he got.

The Magnificent Goldberg
Been listening to Milt Buckner's early stuff and decided that I needed a chunk of Van 'Piano Man' Walls, so I'm playing this Fank Culley - Rock & roll - Atlantic (Official) Great stuff! Randy Weston takes over from Van for the last 2 cuts. MG

In Swaziland there is a game preserve where they have some tame animals near the cottages you can rent, a rhino (!!!!), a gazelle, and Lady Jane the wart-hog. I think the place was pretty new when we were there in '68 or so, and this may have been the first Lady Jane, very muh alive, enjoying the attention she got from visitors, and a few snacks too. There's a Lady Jane there now, so I think there's a dynasty of them. One morning the rhino chased my brother Les around a bit. A little bit of exctiement. Here's another photo from that album, this is in front of our home in Ethiopia, '67 I think. Edited November 19, 2012 by jazzbo

Clunky
Sonny Rollins- The Alternative Rollins (RCA France)- amazing that this sat in the can for so many years. Excellent Rollins and by no means scraps from the cutting room floor.

robertoart
James Blood Ulmer - Tales of Captain Black (Artists House). Enjoying the full bookleted experience for the first time ever - thanks, JSngry. To state my major problem with this album positively rather than negatively: I sure would have enjoyed hearing Ronald Shannon Jackson in the drum chair.. You'll just have to listen to the next one instead. Are You Glad To Be In America. RSJ and Grant Calvin Weston, two for the price of one. The Rough Trade one is a better mix than the Artist's House release though. And it's mastered by the legendary Porky Peckham - Britain's own post-punk Rudy Van-Gelder. Incidentally TOCB has a VanGelder stamp in the dead wax

And in doing all this, I discovered, after decades of happy use, that the gatefold sleeve is AMBIDEXTROUS!!!!! Now replaced the LP in the right hand opening. mjazzg
first listen to a new arrival. Track 'Donna Lee' has the most abrupt fade, make that cut off (sounds like the band fell off a cliff) I've heard in a long while. Enjoying Pete Warren's contributions

I have the Artists House issue - an album which I just realized discounts my assertion (in another thread) that all the AH albums came with booklets. And now that you pointed out that Tales of Captain Black has a Van Gelder stamp, I've started fetishizing it as an object.
