ajf67 Posted June 14, 2005 Report Posted June 14, 2005 Art Pepper 'Living Legend' (Contemporary) with Hampton Hawes, Charlie Haden, Shelly Manne ← I really love that record. I think it's my favorite of the later Pepper. Tonight I'm trying out some new purchases from Joe's Record Paradise in Rockville, MD. First up is Phantasmagoria by Curtis Clark, with Roberto Miranda and Sonship Theus. 1984 Nimbus Records. Curtis Clark Deep Sea Diveralso on Nimbus, from 1985 Sam Rivers Sizzle from 1976 on ABC. Has Dave Holland and Barry Altschul, among others. Quote

Quasimado Posted June 14, 2005 Report Posted June 14, 2005 *The Winds of Marsh* with the Warne Marsh Quintet on Imperial. This is an original stereo version of *Jazz of 2 Cities*, with a cutesy cheese-cake cover... but the music, with spliced-in alternative solos, is just beautiful. Q Quote
sidewinder Posted June 14, 2005 Report Posted June 14, 2005 (edited) Manfred Mann 'Chapter Three' (Vertigo). Some nice playing from saxophonist Bernie Living on this one. A very successful late 60s rock and jazz hybrid. Followed by: Gerry Mulligan/Shelly Manne 'Jazz Combo From I Want To Live' (London label UK original mono pressing) Slide Hampton Octet 'Sister Salvation' (London label UK original mono, DG) Edited June 14, 2005 by sidewinder Quote

What's he like in a stripped-down context? Quote

clifford_thornton Posted June 15, 2005 Report Posted June 15, 2005 Thanks for the info... another one to seek! Quote
sidewinder Posted June 15, 2005 Report Posted June 15, 2005 Clifford - like many of the Vertigos its quite a tough one to find. Took me ages to find one but this copy appeared yesterday at £8 ( ). Sleeve not the greatest but vinyl not bad at all after the VPI treatment. Quote
porcy62 Posted June 15, 2005 Report Posted June 15, 2005 Clifford - like many of the Vertigos its quite a tough one to find. ← Correct, the only Vertigo's records I have in my collection are the early lp of BLACK SABBATH! Quote
sidewinder Posted June 15, 2005 Report Posted June 15, 2005 Pressing quality is usually pretty good though and they have that nice Vertigo 'swirl' on one side.. Quote

clifford_thornton Posted June 16, 2005 Report Posted June 16, 2005 I've lucked out on Vertigo prices, but then I don't have the Nucleus records or the one in question... and made a boner a few years ago of not buying the Agitation Free for $30. Oops... Quote
clifford_thornton Posted June 16, 2005 Report Posted June 16, 2005 (edited) Oh yeah, Gruppe Nuova Consonanza "Improvisationen" (Deutsche Grammophone)... clanging and carryings-on at various densities by several 'name' Italians and an American bassist.
