Oh my, talk about a surprise! Don Sebesky is in full early orchestral flower here, and Sheldon can play anything and put some musicality in it...take these performances, record them at RVG w/Creed Taylor providing the direction sonially, and you'd have something like White Rabbit or Sky Dive. Almost, anyway.

I know that's a big turnoff for many, but hey, I like to hear what people can do with projects like this, what angle they decide to take, do they decide to play it safe, or do they go ahead and do stuff that they wouldn't have to do, just because? On this album, they go for it, and it works quite well. It's still easy-listening, make no mistake, but somewhat....expansive easy listening.

Stopped at a record store this evening and walked out with half a dozen new slabs of vinyl. Just played:

George Cables - Cables Vision (Contemporary). This one got me thinking about Max Harrison's dictum that all music is dated - that it all reflects the period in which it was created. This is a good album, but parts of it are somewhat dated in a negative way.

Bill Barron - Variations in Blue (Muse). This one seems timeless.

Mono. A desert island recording for me.

So it has "The Sky Fell Down", right? Waaaaay cool, you get to hear it in context!

Desert island record for me too. Gorgeous in every way?

You won't approve of this Sidewinder, but in a programme of progressive replacement, I've ended up with a CD that looks like this:

I have the 2CD version and to be honest that is my favourite ! The 12" Capitol version sounds nice though.

Such a cool album. Strayhorn arrangements, Rosie's first full length lp studio feature, Duke's first lp on returning to Columbia.

Wish my dad would have known about this one...he loved him some Mills Brothers, and the first live jazz I ever heard was a Count Basie gig he took me to in 1970 as a birthday present. We'd have had some fun listening to this one. But we had a lot of other fun, so...guess you can't have all the fun, eh?

Carpe diem!
