CJ Shearn
Jimmy Smith - It's necessary - Mercury - smashing 1977 live session from Jimmy Smith's Supper Club, with Blue Mitchell, Harold Land, Ray Crawford, Kenny Dixon & Buck Clarke. and Teddy Edwards! That's a fine, fine record. I agree. Since Verve owns Mercury (I think) it's surprising this never made it to CD. Jimmy's other Mercury albums are terrible. They are great for people who love funk and synths but for those of us that love JOS' organ playing "Its Necessary" and "Unfinished Business" aren't it. robertoart
Johnny Copeland - Copeland special - Rounder MG Alert! MG is listening to avant-garde musicians: George Adams, Byard Lancaster, Yusef Yancey, Garrett List! Have you heard this yet MG? Hank Marr with a very young James Blood Ulmer and George Adams. It defines the word 'raw' . Apparently this band played the clubs in Germany. A very kind man named Arthur Shoulders made a needle drop of this LP for me over ten years ago. I promised to send him a fiver for his generous gesture, but never got around to it. Dear Mr Shoulders, if you read this board, please PM me and I will send you a tenner instead. Kevin Bresnahan
Gene Ammons - Blue Gene. A regular ol' Fantasy reissue from the 80s. Sounds fine too. These things are probably one of the best Jazz vinyl bargains out there. $3 for this one and worth every penny.
jeffcrom
Steve Lacy - Shots (Musica). Mr. Lacy in 1977, with Masa Kwate on traditional Japanese percussion instruments. Wonderful cover by artist Brion Grysin, another frequent Lacy collaborator.
JSngry
Well, this is an odd one... Kinda like Fat Albert Rotunda goes looking for Hot Rats...or something. Really werd keyboard sounds, and really weird self-penned liner notes extolling the virtues of same. OTOH, everybody's playing their ass off in that early-70s L.A. stretchy-jazz-rocky kinda way. Charles Owens in particular gets lively & frisky, & Sal Marquez is heard to good advantage (this being around the time he was with Grand Wazoo. iirc). Don't really know trombonist Yusef Rahman, but he's got good chops and energy both. I'd developed a relexive dislike for Mike Deasy afeter his work with Cannonball, but he's on one side here, and actually plays nicely. Interesting record, actually, especially Johnson's weirdass keyboard work, just not at all what I was expecting in terms of direction. jeffcrom
Today's vinyl, so far: Bobby Watson - No Question About It (BN) Oregon - Friends (Vanguard). The friends are Bennie Wallace, pianist Larry Karush, and percussionist David Earle Johnson. Don Pullen/Chico Freeman/Fred Hopkins/Bobby Battle - Warriors (Black Saint) Kind of all over the place, in a way, but it's all jazz, baby. JSngry
Don Pullen/Chico Freeman/Fred Hopkins/Bobby Battle - Warriors (Black Saint) That album can try the stamina if you're not up for it, but if you are....WHOO-HOOOOOOO!!!!!

I saw this band in London at a time when the jazz scene was very dull, dominated by soul and funk. It proved that jazz was actually alive and well! sidewinder
Today's vinyl, so far: Bobby Watson - No Question About It (BN) Another group I have good memories of seeing live. On deck - Dick Morrissey 'Storm Warning' (UK Mercury, mono). This one is a match for anything of that era on Blue Note.

jazzbo
I read such good things about the new LP reissues of the Hendrix catalog from Columbia that I tried some out at bargain prices. colinmce
This AM: Bill Evans Trio - Live (Verve, 1964) Billy Usselton Sextet - His First Album (Kapp, 1957) The Evans features what might be his most textbook playing. I like it though. The Usselton is nice. This is the original pressing, but it was reissued by Fresh Sound. Intriguing front line of tenor, bass clarinet, and trombone. Well arranged, but not overarranged, with Usselton sounding kind of like Paul Desmond on the larger horn. But just kind of.
