mjazzg Posted May 27, 2012 Report Posted May 27, 2012 starting with the Large Ensembles. Such powerful writing, arranging, playing Quote
jeffcrom Posted May 27, 2012 Report Posted May 27, 2012 Lambert, Hendricks and Ross - Sing a Song of Basie (ABC Paramount mono). Not a group I listen to often, but I found a very nice copy of their first album in the dollar bin down the street. It's a hoot - just a really fun album. Quote
JSngry Posted May 28, 2012 Report Posted May 28, 2012 Some primo Jaws here. Everybody and everything else sounds just dandy as well. and Vi Redd really grabs the ear. Quote
sidewinder Posted May 28, 2012 Report Posted May 28, 2012 Don Wilkerson 'Shoutin'' (BN NY USA, mono) Quote

vinyltim Posted May 29, 2012 Report Posted May 29, 2012 Don Wilkerson 'Shoutin'' (BN NY USA, mono) very cool--haven't heard that yet though--seems like it would be up my alley Quote
jeffcrom Posted May 30, 2012 Report Posted May 30, 2012 Miles Davis - Miles at Fillmore (Columbia). Sides one & two. There's so much amazing stuff here. It goes without saying that I'd love to hear the unedited performances. They'll be issued, I'm sure - I just hope it's within my lifetime. Quote
vinyltim Posted May 30, 2012 Report Posted May 30, 2012 This is a great record--can't get enough Grant Green right now and Philly Joe is at his best... I think this is a first pressing, just as BN transitioned into the New York USA label. It's New York USA on side A, 47W63 NYC on side B--no deepgroove on either side. Has the RVG and "p" stamp... http://www.timenjoysrecords.com/records/hank-mobley-workout Quote

chewy-chew-chew-bean-benitez Posted May 30, 2012 Report Posted May 30, 2012 if one day this turns up somewhere im gonna flip Horace Silver - The Jody Grind. A nice original Van Gelder pressing. Since the master is a needle drop, I guess I have a copy of the master tape. Quote

Which I don't listen to as much as I should. Bet this vinyl sounds sublime. if one day this turns up somewhere im gonna flip Horace Silver - The Jody Grind. A nice original Van Gelder pressing. Since the master is a needle drop, I guess I have a copy of the master tape. First pressing NYUSA Horace Silver's seem to be the most affordable and accessible Blue Note vinyl treasures. Especially on ebay. Well they were as late as last year anyway, when I was still looking. Jimmy Smith too. Don't give up yet Chewy. Quote

Just got the 1980's Blue Note/Manhattan reissue. Which I don't listen to as much as I should. Bet this vinyl sounds sublime. It does, despite the condition. I have a needledrop of the opening track up--click on the link to check it out. Quote

Some of those Hank Mobley 1st pressings look as though someone has taken them into a combat zone - yet they can sound amazingly good. Like an idiot I passed on a 1st press NY USA mono 'No Room For Squares' in this condition for about a fiver several years ago (sleeve was OK though). Next time I went back though it was gone. Quote
clifford_thornton Posted May 30, 2012 Report Posted May 30, 2012 Most of mine are later pressings (Liberty, Toshiba) but in nice shape... I have an early "Turnaround" that looks okay but sounds pretty crackly. Too bad because it's a fine album. Quote
jeffcrom Posted May 31, 2012 Report Posted May 31, 2012 The New Howlin' Wolf Album (Cadet Concept). Wolf called this album "dogshit," but I have liked it more and more as the years pass. Pete Cosey provides the most extreme of the guitar weirdness here. Quote
The Magnificent Goldberg Posted May 31, 2012 Report Posted May 31, 2012 Still nothin'. My new deck arrived as scheduled but after a look at the contents and the assembly instructions, I realised I was out of my depth. So I called our plumber Seriously, the plumber is a heavy hifi and vinyl fan (rock only) and spends tens of thousands on hifi equipment. You know we're ALL in the wrong business, don't you? He thinks he'll be able to come round at the weekend and help. Well, he IS a plumber. MG Quote

The fellow who does our plumbing worked security at Levon Helm's Midnight Rambles and traveled with Levon's Band to weekend concerts. He hooked up with Levon when he installed a bathroom in Mr. Helm's barn/recording studio. Quote
JSngry Posted May 31, 2012 Report Posted May 31, 2012 Speaking of plumber's...there's some nifty plunger work going on here: ...also on hand to unclog the drain are Hal Singer & Jimmy Forrest. Not even my arch-nemesis of groove Bobby Durham can stop this faucet from running full-on!Oh yeah, Gatemouth Brown, too! Quote
BillF Posted May 31, 2012 Report Posted May 31, 2012 (edited) The Palm label reminds me that I have the companion 10" LP to the disc below. I suppose these sides are now available on CD? http://991.com/Buy/ProductInformation.aspx?StockNumber=551966&PrinterFriendly=1 Edited May 31, 2012 by BillF Quote
JSngry Posted May 31, 2012 Report Posted May 31, 2012 No idea about the Palm label, other than that in looking for an image of the one I have, I also found these: Looks like the label on all of these is Palm 30, not just Palm. Not sure if there's a connection or not. The one I have appears to be French, and is bootleg like a mofo. All airshots from 1937-38, and only basic song/personnel listings. No addresses or production credits to be found, even in invisible ink. As far as CD issue...I've not a clue! Found this at a Half-Price books for not very much a few months ago and figured why not, I might have it in some other format, I might not. As it turns out, two cuts were previously(?) issued on the Columbia Super Chief two-fer, but the others were all new to me. Serendipity! Quote
