JSngry
I don't know what "enhanced for stereo" here means, since it usually means "we made it sound godawful". They didn't,
JSngry
All tenor. Sweet date. Charles Davis is one of those players who's not particularly "profound" by conventional "critical" standards, but he's just so damn....personal in everything he plays that I end up saying OH WELL!!! about all that. Personal is profound in my book, so bring it on, some Charles Davis. And you - yeah, you - if you think you might even halfway like this record and don't already have it, go get it. Shouldn't be too hard to find. http://www.dustygroove.com/item.php?id=r6cwv368fj Still sealed bitches, STILL SEALED!!!! And only fonineynine! Kevin Bresnahan
Dexter Gordon - Biting The Apple (Inner City). Like the Art Tatum Pablo LP that I played the other night, this is one where the CD kills the LP. I don't know if the Steeplechase LP is better, but this one isn't that great. jeffcrom
Sun Ra - The Soul Vibrations of Man (El Saturn). Live at the Jazz Showcase in Chicago, November, 1977. I'll bet that Larry, John L. or Chuck was there. My pressing is in plain black sleeve, but here's the label. Edited to correct a slip of the brain regarding the venue. clifford_thornton
Classic Ra! Now spinning: Tchicai/Geerken/Moye - West Africa Tour - (Sagittarius A-Star) Great 4LP box, and considering these recordings were made on a Sony Walkman, they sound pretty good. jeffcrom
Gene Ammons - The Twister (Prestige blue label mono). Apparently the rarest of the several covers under which this excellent blowing session (AKA Jammin' in Hi-Fi with Gene Ammons) was issued. BillF
Premier class Powell tracks! I have them on this: Wow--that's cool. When is that release from? I've had it since the early 1960s. It has your 8 tracks, plus 4 less impressive tracks from a later session: "Embraceable You", "My Heart Stood Still", "You'd Be So Nice To Come Home To" and "Burt Covers Bud". jeffcrom
The World of Duke Ellington, Volume 3 (Columbia). I love these three double-LP sets, which cover Ellington's late-40's/early 50's Columbia recordings better than just about anywhere else. My copies are all in fake stereo, but they don't sound bad with a mono cartridge - just a little too reverb-y.
