clifford_thornton Posted May 5, 2012 Report Posted May 5, 2012 Leo Wright - Flote und Alto-Sax - (Amiga) with Candy Green and the guitarist Andre Condouant, who's quite a revelation. Have had this LP for a few years but never "really" listened to it until now. Quote
sidewinder Posted May 5, 2012 Report Posted May 5, 2012 (edited) Art Blakey New York 1957 (Musidisc) Bought Paris in the 70s. Sticker reads "19F Prix Maximum" Love the Hardman/McLean Messengers! I remember those - they were often in the £1.99 bargain/deletion bins. Edited May 5, 2012 by sidewinder Quote
BillF Posted May 5, 2012 Report Posted May 5, 2012 Art Blakey New York 1957 (Musidisc) Bought Paris in the 70s. Sticker reads "19F Prix Maximum" Love the Hardman/McLean Messengers! I remember those - they were often in the £1.99 bargain/deletion bins. I seem to remember the franc was about 13 to the pound at the time, so I did OK! Wonderful album, which I believe was issued in the U.S. as Mirage. On mine all the tunes are listed as Blakey compositions, which they clearly aren't. A bit of research came up with the far more convincing Gryce, plus some by Draper. There was a Ray Draper who played tuba, but would this have been him? Quote

Yesterday also found a copy of Rollin' (MPS) - again a good one if more conventional hard bop but well played with no evident slacking Quote

jeffcrom Posted May 7, 2012 Report Posted May 7, 2012 "Tabby"...isn't that a cat? Yes, and that cat is the father of bluesman Chris Thomas King. Probably scratched Chris when he was a kid. Quote

JSngry Posted May 7, 2012 Report Posted May 7, 2012 Haven't heard the album, but the cover photo looks like Doctor Billy Taylor is being held inside a jail cell the door of which was designed by an orthodontist! Quote
