jeffcrom
Louis Armstrong - Disney Songs the Satchmo Way (Buena Vista stereo) Don't laugh. This 1968 record is my favorite late Louis album. Yeah, most of the songs are stupid, and have leaden accompaniments with corny choirs, but neither of those things ever stopped Louis from being brilliant. And along with the lousy songs are some pretty good ones, like "When You Wish Upon a Star" and "Chim Chim Cheree." In addition to the great singing, there's a trumpet solo on almost every song, and the playing is just brilliant - every solo has surprising note choices, unexpected suspensions, and asymmetrical phrasing. This is some of Armstrong's absolute best latter-day trumpet playing.
vinyltim
What a great album. The OJC copy I have sounds good too, but it's nice to have an early pressing.... http://www.timenjoysrecords.com/records/sonny-rollins-way-out-west

Kevin Bresnahan
John Clark - Faces (ECM) For some weird reason, I read this title as "Feces" at first!
king ubu
ts ts... now playing: Urs Leimgruber could (and still can, if he wants to) blow a mean muscular tenor!

king ubu
Weird... seems the CD has the whole programme changed and while omitting the opening "Thelonica", it adds two tunes on on the LP, "Ask Me Now" and "Light Blue". Guess I can live with the LP, it's likely not to become a big Flanagan favorite anyway (those would be "Giant Steps" and "Eclypso" at this time). BillF
Thad Jones & Mel Lewis - Suite for Pops Ah, yes! I also have these on vinyl: AND I saw the band in 1969!
king ubu
I've got this one on vinyl: And of course the earlier stuff (Mosaic box, Basle disc on TCB). The Munich album is mighty good! Got to dig it up, too! As for 1969... it took me ten years from then to even get born - so, no, alas I've never seen them live, but I guess they really blew out of the room with their force!
