Ah, never had that one though I do dig Wallin. I bet his large ensemble writing is "stewy."

the arranging here reminds me of the Sam Rivers band in some ways especially the use of the saxes ( 2 tenors, 1 alto and 1 baritone)

Chicago Piano-ology (Chess/P-Vine Japan)

Some interesting sidemen on these recordings: Eddie Chamblee with Little Walter (Walter on guitar) on the Eddie Ware sides; B.B. King and Jody Williams playing guitar with Otis Spann; and three Henry Gray sides with harp player Henry Strong, who was murdered the next year and didn't record again after this session (with Gray and Morris Pejoe).

Getting my Steve Lacy records mixed up, this one must have a different Woe than the Weal and Woe

Steve Lacy Crops and The Woe ( 1976 and 1973)

No, it's the same one. The solo recordings on Crops were later issued on CD, along with the rest of the concert they came from, as Hooky (Emanem 4042). The Woe suite was then paired on CD with the Avignon concert as Weal and Woe. Now that Mr. Davidson has found more solo material to add to the Avignon concert, "The Woe" has now been reissued on The Sun.

I think Emanem is vying with Prestige to confuse us with varying issues of the same material. :) Actually, I'm glad that Mr. Davidson keeps finding more music to issue and trying to pair it in the most logical way possible.

Thanks, moving on from Lacy to some more jazz from Sweden

Claes- Goran Fagerstedt Stone Free Odeon, funky vocal take on the Hendrix tune C-G F with the Bernt Rosengren Orchestra on this track only , the rest is piano solo or trio and one single track with strings. Inessential IMO

Sometimes I think I like the idea of Betty Carter more than the reality - if that makes sense.

Me, too. I saw her live once, and it was more impressive/scary than enjoyable. Probably just me.

I saw her live once too. Blues Alley in DC (1981), got there about 10 minutes before the hit, got to sit behind the band, Saw what was going on when she turned around, all of it.

Scary as hell, believe me but enjoyable as hell too, somebody that into it, not letting the band go anywhere but where she wanted them to go. And where she wanted to go - and went - was crazymad badass GREAT, Not just some "chick singer", but a freakin' improvisor of the highest order.

Then again, maybe it was just a really good night. And I don't know that it always translated to record (but her duet w/Geri Allen on "Memories Of You" sure does...). But seeing it all go down, and seeing a vocalist's backing group paying uber-attention like they were all a James Brown drummer, hey, it was a rare treat.

Been listening to the Complete Blue Note Horace Parlan Sessions (LP) over the course of the last week, mixing in other items as I go. This one is hot:

There is a JCOA flyer laid in the album jacket. One of the titles listed, "Gardens of Harlem," by Clifford Thornton-- I don't think I've ever seen, but sure would like to.
