Edward Vesala- Heavy Life - Leo Finland -1980 . Great nonet including Stanko, Reggie Workman, James Spaulding, Chico Hamilton, Howard Johnson , Joe Daley . Heavy indeed.

:tup It's that Vesala/Stanko winning team again, Clunky. (your Twet post last week IIRC)

This one's escaped me so far but have fond memories of hearing a mates many years ago

correct, Twet and this represent the sum total of my Vesala/Stanko holdings. I have Live at Remont on order though :smirk:

Balladyna on ECM is the only other one that comes to my mind (there's a couple of big bands, one on Vesala's Leo, I think). I didn't realse that Live at Remont was readily available (£80 on discogs at the moment) or have you tracked a rarity?

Purple Sun, on Calig, is also a nice one.

I didn't think that had Vesala on. Could well be wrong thogh as never seen a copy

Oh sorry, thought you were just referring to Stanko.

Milt Jackson 'Plenty, Plenty Soul' (Atlantic, mono, black label)

jacksonPlentySoul.jpg

Very fine allstar date with splendid arrangements by Quincy Jones :tup

I lost that one in the divorce 15 years ago. (She wasn't all bad - she was a Milt Jackson fan.) I need to get it again, in some form.

Don't get the Japanese CD. The sound is dead muffled.

This morning's LPs

Ramsey Lewis - Goin' Latin - Cadet (Chess UK)

Milt Buckner - Then there eyes (with Buddy Tate) - Black & Blue (Belter)

Mickey 'Guitar' Baker - The wildest guitar - Atlantic (WEA Canada)

very good one! got this early 70s pressing, could have gotten the first pressing but it was too darn expensive...

Wonderful album! The record that the phrase 'rip-roarin', snortin'' was created for.

the Japanese CD version ( 60th anniversary ) I have sounds fine, although I do remember some debate regarding the sound of various issues of this title

Mine isn't the 60th anniversary issue. It's a good bit eatlier. Got it in Japan in 2002.

Lightnin' Hopkins Strums the Blues (Score/Pathe Marconi)

A quote from what I assume are the original liner notes: "Like all great folk artists, like Ives, Lightnin' Hopkins improvises easily."

That's hilarious.

Company - Trios (Incus) From Company Week, 1983 - Vinko Globokar, trombone, voice, flute; Joelle Leandre, bass, voice; Hugh Davies, live electronics; J.D.Parran, basset horn & piccolo; Peter Brötzmann, tenor & baritone saxophones; Jamie Muir, percussion; Ernst Reijseger, cello & electric cello; Evan Parker, tenor & soprano saxophones, John Corbett, trumpet & flugelhorn; Derek Bailey, acoustic and electric guitars. The short Parker/Reijseger/Bailey trio that ends side one is really beautiful.

I was in the mood for something slightly off the wall:

Jimmy & Marian McPartland - Play TV Themes (Design stereo). Among the oddities on the front and back cover are Marian's misspelled name, the attribution of the trombonist as "Manhattan Red" (Urbie Green, presumably), and the arranger credit: Aul Hedd. The music's pretty good, actually.
