Leeway Posted September 8, 2011 Report Posted September 8, 2011 I had never seen this album before spotting it last week in a local dealer's shelves---for a very low price (it's in mint condition). It's from 1987, and I'm always leery of 1980s jazz (another thread for that). But this one is quite good: Quote
Leeway Posted September 9, 2011 Report Posted September 9, 2011 Barefield here too. Roscoe Mitchell Quartet: Roscoe, Barefield, Muhal Richard Abrams, George Lewis. Sackville LP, from 1975 concert. Quote
Chuck Nessa Posted September 9, 2011 Report Posted September 9, 2011 He's on Snurdy McGurdy too. Quote
Leeway Posted September 9, 2011 Report Posted September 9, 2011 He's on Snurdy McGurdy too. Yes indeed. He performed a lot with Roscoe in the Sound Ensembles. I was curious to see what he was like leading his own group. Obviously, he gets to bring his guitar to the foreground, but some of Roscoe's influence remains in the music. This was my first listen, but it will get more. Quote
jeffcrom Posted September 9, 2011 Report Posted September 9, 2011 The Dixie Hummingbirds - We Love You Like a Rock (Peacock). A little 1973-trendy, but still very good. Quote
Leeway Posted September 9, 2011 Report Posted September 9, 2011 More Rudd. Quite a group on this one: Giuseppe Logan, Lewis Worrell, Charlie Haden, Beaver Harris, Robin Kenyatta. Impulse! MONO LP. A hot LP all through. Quote
paul secor Posted September 10, 2011 Report Posted September 10, 2011 Ornette Coleman: Who's Crazy? Pt. 1 (Atmosphere) When I was in college, I saw the film, acted by The Living Theatre, that this sound track was made for. And, iirc, Marianne Faithfull sang "Lonely Woman" as part of the sound track. The music was far better than the film. Quote
jeffcrom Posted September 10, 2011 Report Posted September 10, 2011 Defunkt - Razor's Edge/Strangling Me With Your Love (Hannibal 12" single). A great record, circa 1980, by Joseph Bowie's funk band with some nice playing by brother Lester. Julius Hemphill - Roi Boye & the Gotham Minstrels (Sackville). Disc one. Quote
jeffcrom Posted September 10, 2011 Report Posted September 10, 2011 Lou Donaldson - Possum Head (Cadet stereo). I found this copy a few months ago - it's not in great shape, but a good cleaning put it (barely) into the listenable category. I loves me some Lou and some John Patton, so I'll keep it until I find a better copy. Quote
jeffcrom Posted September 10, 2011 Report Posted September 10, 2011 The Gospel Soul of Houston Person (Savoy) Quote

Clunky Posted September 10, 2011 Report Posted September 10, 2011 Miles Davis - Bitches Brew - Columbia UK ( orange label)- this recent purchase sounds so much better than the late 80s CD version. Quote
