Thelonious Monk (Prestige two-fer). Still my Monk Prestige edition. (I have the sessions with Sonny Rollins elsewhere.) The 1954 quintet session with Frank Foster and Ray Copeland is very underrated, in my opinion.

And has anyone else ever noticed that there is apparently a fourth "musician" on "Bye-Ya?" I put "musician" in quotes because someone is playing a clave rhythm - with a pair of drumsticks, maybe - and his time isn't very good. It's not Blakey - I can account for what each of his hands is doing.

Dick Hyman Trio - Swingin' Double Date (Lion mono). I picked this out of the dollar bin of a local record store a few years ago. It's a "double date" because Hyman plays organ on one side and piano on the other. The organ side is fairly corny, but the piano side swings in a kind of Billy Taylor-ish way. It's a fun record to spin every once in a while. Lion was MGM's budget label, by the way.

Yeah, I assume that the vinyl sounds better than the Jazzprint CD.

Yes, most definitely. Sonically, although more than acceptable, this isn't the greatest recording quality (John Taylor's 'Pause & Think Again' for Turtle Records is similar, in that regard).

I've not heard the CD but I'd agree, the LP sounds good enough but it's no RVG. It's a very fine session and the copy I got is in mint condition , so it's as good as it's likely to get. Thank you Oxfam

Blimey - good find. The rare LPs I have sporadically come across at Oxfam are now marked up substantially, such that they are not a good deal. I haven't bought an LP from there now for many a year. Most of the English stores are endlessly picked over by crate diggers as well, which doesn't help.

Funilly enough my 'Flare Up' is a mint one too so we might well have two of the best copies extant. My 'Warm Smiles' is in this condition too.

it was £75 , which makes it the most expensive LP I've ever bought, but given it's condition and prices on Popsike seems like a good enough deal, obviously not cheap and i've blown my Lp budget for this month and next !! Besides that the money all goes to charity - at least it helps justify the decision to pick it up .

That's a good price - £100 and up for that one (usually nearer £125 to £150), especially in that condition. As you say, it goes to a good cause too so a 'win win'. :tup

Yeah for some reason I've never bothered to buy that on LP - dunno why, considering it was such a priority to get the related Graham Collier discography on vinyl!

How is the pressing on the Beckett? Some of those Philips jazz titles have been a bit "crackly" in my experience, even when ostensibly mint-.

No noticeable crackling on mine. One thing I do notice about Philips LPs of that vintage (and Fontana - same parent) is that the 'sound to noise ratio' is a bit on the low side. Nowhere near the big punchy sound that you would get with a Blue Note for eaxample, so you have to crank the volume up.
