What vinyl are you spinning right now??

The Young Bloods, from the Donald Byrd 70's two-fer House of Byrd (Prestige). Byrd sounds really young here.

I never enjoyed Byrd's playing overmuch, but I decided to put in Transition Sessions the other day and was really impressed. His playing on "Crazy Rhythm" was dazzling. Maybe I need to listen harder.

I really like his work in the 1960's, but he sounds really unformed on The Young Bloods.

I like the Byrds WAY more than the Youngbloods, although the latter had a couple of decent tunes.

Now playing:

The Beach Boys - Pet Sounds - Capitol (rainbow label)

DUOPHONIC!

This the BEST SOUNDING version of Pet Sounds I've ever heard! Take that, you mono purists!

Ian Carr/Jeff Clyne 'Springboard' (UK Polodor) and Rendell/Carr 'Dusk Fire' (UK Columbia Lansdowne Series, mono)

right up there IMO with some of the best from Blue Note

I don't think John Patton's sound has ever been caught better than on that album - particularly in that pressing.

Jeff-Clyne--Ian-Carr-Springboard-441710.jpg

Never seen that before. What style is it in? Free (ish) jazz or something more rock based?

Yes, a rare early excursion by Ian Carr into free-ish jazz. A route he didn't subsequently follow with Nucleus.

These are mid-60s recordings which sneaked out some years later on the Budget Polydor label, sold a handful and promptly sank without trace !

Thanks. Always nice to see these odd things come out of the woods.

Barry Harris 'Luminescence' (Prestige, stereo, green label)

Mine's a green label of that one too. I wonder if it ever came out in blue label?

Yes, here's a blue label one.

Re: Springboard, been trying to get that for over a decade and always come up short. Would love to have a copy.

It's mythical, even over here. Seems to have come and gone in a whisker !

Until a CD comes out, I guess I might just have to raise my price ceiling to get a copy. Quite often it's offered in fairly rough shape, too, which is a drag.

Miles Davis: At Plugged Nickel, Chicago Volume 1 (CBS Sony Japan)

I've never been able to make an emotional connection with this band. But I keep listening and hoping that it will happen.

Have you tried Miles Smiles? That MD Quintet is probably, along with King Oliver's Creole Jazz Band, my favorite small jazz band. But, of course, we don't have to like all the same things.

Right now:

Red Garland - Red Alone (Prestige/Moodsville mono). This sounds really good after a long, intense rehearsal.

Paul Bley - Solemn Meditation (GNP mono)

Capt. John Handy/Kid Thomas Valentine/Jim Robinson, etc. - Sleepy Time Gal (Center) This is the little-known third album from the famous 1965 "December Band" concert. (Well, it's famous among New Orleans jazz aficionados, anyway.)

Sugar Mama Blues (Biograph) 1949 blues; liner notes by Christiern.
