jeffcrom
The Young Bloods, from the Donald Byrd 70's two-fer House of Byrd (Prestige). Byrd sounds really young here. I never enjoyed Byrd's playing overmuch, but I decided to put in Transition Sessions the other day and was really impressed. His playing on "Crazy Rhythm" was dazzling. Maybe I need to listen harder. I really like his work in the 1960's, but he sounds really unformed on The Young Bloods.

Now playing: The Beach Boys - Pet Sounds - Capitol (rainbow label) DUOPHONIC! This the BEST SOUNDING version of Pet Sounds I've ever heard! Take that, you mono purists! jeffcrom
Michael J. Smith - Elvira Madigan... And Other Dances (Horo); record one. A strange one, but then again, Michael is strange. I had forgotten that side one starts with an explosion of sound, followed by two minutes of silence before Michael plays another note. Clunky
Harold Vick Steppin Out BN NY Mono- a very fine B3 session , right up there IMO with some of the best from Blue Note
sidewinder
Ian Carr/Jeff Clyne 'Springboard' (UK Polodor) and Rendell/Carr 'Dusk Fire' (UK Columbia Lansdowne Series, mono) right up there IMO with some of the best from Blue Note I don't think John Patton's sound has ever been caught better than on that album - particularly in that pressing. A Lark Ascending
Never seen that before. What style is it in? Free (ish) jazz or something more rock based?
sidewinder
Never seen that before. What style is it in? Free (ish) jazz or something more rock based? Yes, a rare early excursion by Ian Carr into free-ish jazz. A route he didn't subsequently follow with Nucleus. These are mid-60s recordings which sneaked out some years later on the Budget Polydor label, sold a handful and promptly sank without trace ! sidewinder
Thanks. Always nice to see these odd things come out of the woods. With a bit of luck one day it will come out on CD. This one is like 'Hum Dono' - lost in a black hole.
paul secor
Bud Powell in Paris (Discovery) I'm trying to decide whether I want to go for the Wounded Bird CD issue with extra tracks. Some very nice Bud here, though Kansas Fields' playing sounds out of place from time to time. I'll probably end up springing for the extra tracks. It's mythical, even over here. Seems to have come and gone in a whisker ! Until a CD comes out, I guess I might just have to raise my price ceiling to get a copy. Quite often it's offered in fairly rough shape, too, which is a drag.

But I keep listening and hoping that it will happen. Have you tried Miles Smiles? That MD Quintet is probably, along with King Oliver's Creole Jazz Band, my favorite small jazz band. But, of course, we don't have to like all the same things. Right now: Red Garland - Red Alone (Prestige/Moodsville mono). This sounds really good after a long, intense rehearsal.
