paul secor Posted December 24, 2010 Report Posted December 24, 2010 Johnny Griffin 'Way Out' (Riverside, mono) One of my favorite Johnny Griffin recordings - there are a number that fall into that category. My copy is a Japanese repro, not a mono original, but the music is still great. Quote
porcy62 Posted December 24, 2010 Report Posted December 24, 2010 Tchaikowsky - Violin Concerto in D - Haifetz/Reiner, RCA, mono. What a magnificient "easy listening" composer Tchaikowsky was! Quote

MartyJazz Posted December 25, 2010 Report Posted December 25, 2010 Harry James & his Orchestra, Aragon Ballroom, Chicago, October '52 Grew up on this stuff, but after so many years of digging post Dizzy trumpeters, I find James' molasses-soaked tone a little tough to digest. The opening "Ultra" however is a kick, an obvious re-working of "How High the Moon". Quote

jeffcrom Posted December 29, 2010 Report Posted December 29, 2010 Jazz Odyssey, Vol. II: The Sound of Chicago (Columbia) - disc one. I have most of this stuff elsewhere, but this set has some very cool rare tracks. Lyle Murphy - 12-Tone Compositions and Arrangements (Contemporary) The Sunny Meadows Radio Show - 1929 (Sunbeam). Pretty interesting - two episodes of one of the first transcribed radio shows, sponsored by the Meadows Washing Machine Company. Side one features Ray Miller's dance band from Chicago, with young Muggsy Spanier. Quote
