paul secor Posted November 4, 2010 Report Posted November 4, 2010 John Coltrane 'Crescent' (Impulse, orange label, mono) Have that same issue. It was the first Trane I bought, and I remember being somewhat surprised and disappointed that the playing wasn't further out. I had heard Ornette at that point and expected some of the same from John Coltrane. After a bit, I heard more Coltrane and came to appreciate Crescent. And "further out" Trane wasn't far away. Quote
clifford_thornton Posted November 4, 2010 Report Posted November 4, 2010 Lovely record - I started with the "out" Trane and came to appreciate the "in" (or moreso anyway) Trane a bit more, actually. Quote
BillF Posted November 4, 2010 Report Posted November 4, 2010 Always thought Crescent was a superlative album, certainly among the top handful of Trane's many discs. Quote
Clunky Posted November 4, 2010 Report Posted November 4, 2010 Horace Silver- Song for my father- BN MM 45 rpm issue, sounds very good and way better than my McMaster CD ( which I'll be keeping for the extra tracks etc) I find Crescent more "out there" than Ornette's output around then. Quote
Chuck Nessa Posted November 4, 2010 Report Posted November 4, 2010 Always thought Crescent was a superlative album, certainly among the top handful of Trane's many discs. Better (for me) than Love Supreme. Quote

brownie Posted November 5, 2010 Report Posted November 5, 2010 Always thought Crescent was a superlative album, certainly among the top handful of Trane's many discs. Better (for me) than Love Supreme. Agree. Fresh listening to Crescent brings new perspectives to the quartet's playing. It was at its creative peak by then. As much as I enjoy A Love Supreme, repeated listening emphasize the contemplative aspects of the musicians' improvisations. Quote
MartyJazz Posted November 5, 2010 Report Posted November 5, 2010 Speaking of Trane, enjoy very much Wes' cooking rendition of "Impressions" on this live 2-LP set recorded in Paris, March '65. Quote
jeffcrom Posted November 5, 2010 Report Posted November 5, 2010 Okay, feel free to mock me about this one: Bobby Hackett Plays the Great Music of Henry Mancini (Epic stereo) I sometimes like to pull out one of these "bachelor pad jazz" albums. This is a good one. The tunes and arrangements are pretty corny; Hackett plays great. Quote
