paul secor
Fats Navarro in 1946 on Savoy (Savoy/Arista) Hadn't noticed this before, but the guitarist on the "Lockjaw" Davis led sides is listed as Huey Long. At first I assumed this must be a pseudonymn for contractual reasons, but did a google search and found that he was a guitarist who was best known as a member of the Ink Spots. He passed in 2009 at the age of 105. Remember reading his obituary in The Times, but didn't make the connection when I listened to his music this afternoon. edit - If I had read Dan Morgenstern's liner notes thoroughly I would have realized that Huey Long wasn't a pseudonymn - tho he didn't make mention of the Ink Spots connection. jeffcrom
Dave "Fat Man" Williams - I Ate Up the Apple Tree (New Orleans) Wonderful album by the late Mr. Williams, who is something of a legend in New Orleans but probably unknown everywhere else. The heart of it is a live session from 1974, with English expatriate Clive Wilson on trumpet (it's his record label) and longtime Fats Domino saxist Clarence Ford, who plays some sweet clarinet. It falls stylistically somewhere between R & B and traditional jazz - not that those labels mean much in NOLA.

The Magnificent Goldberg
The Soul Stirrers - The gospel soul of Sam Cooke & the Soul Stirrers vols 1 & 2 - Specialty The Jackson Southernaires/The Williams Brothers (one side each) - With you in mind - Songbird (MCA) - sez 'ere, "produced by Lee Young" - could it be THE Lee Young? finally George Hines & the Gospel Winds - Presenting George Hines & the Gospel Winds - Atlantic For some reason I've never been able to fathom, the guys at Atlantic were very poor at producing gospel records - even when they hired Richard Simpson away from Peacock, he mostly didn't produce anything special - like this one. OK, without being particularly outstanding. MG

jeffcrom
Some amazing stuff, there, MG! Tonight: Sun Ra - Hours After (Black Saint) Gil Evans (Ampex promo) I've been listening to this amazing, mysterious album for over 30 years - my first copy was on 8-track tape. There are so many layers happening at the same time - it's like a Jackson Pollock painting. Beautiful.
