sidewinder Posted July 28, 2010 Report Posted July 28, 2010 Lou Donaldson 'Sweet Slumber' (BN King). Nice Duke Pearson mid-sized band with totally stellar lineup (Shorter, Hubbard, Pepper Adams, McCoy). Quote
ajf67 Posted July 29, 2010 Report Posted July 29, 2010 "Giants of Boogie Woogie" on Riverside. Albert Ammons, Pete Johnson and Meade Lux Lewis. This one is an old white label deep groove and it sounds great. A few pops but nothing that matters to me. Quote

sidewinder Posted July 29, 2010 Report Posted July 29, 2010 Presenting Thad Jones/Mel Lewis & The Jazz Orchestra (EMI/United Artists) I'm quite fond of that pressing - with its Sonny Lester reverb and Garrod & Lofthouse sleeve ! Quote

jeffcrom Posted July 30, 2010 Report Posted July 30, 2010 Sunny Murray - An Even Break (BYG) Byard Lancaster is so soulful. Marion Brown - Three for Shepp (Impulse) I was planning on listening to this even before DaveS's post. This is such a beautiful album. Stanley Cowell's stride piano on "Spooks" is just amazing. Quote
ajf67 Posted July 30, 2010 Report Posted July 30, 2010 Previously: Percy Mayfield - Bought Blues Fred Wesley And The J.B.'s - Damn Right I Am Somebody Now: Roy Brooks - The Free Slave "The Free Slave" is a nice one. Right now I'm listening to "Red Allen Meets Kid Ory" on a mono Verve. Before that was "Swing Session With Edmond Hall" on Commodore. Quote

Teasing the Korean Posted July 30, 2010 Report Posted July 30, 2010 (edited) Michel Legrand plays Richard Rodgers - Philips (black label, mono). From 1962, this is an overlooked gem that has not been reissued on CD AFAIK. A big band lineup augmented with woodwinds, french horns, and additional percussion. Brilliant writing, lots of jazz content and that touch of Kennedy-era space age sparkle. Right up there with Legrand Jazz, IMHO. Then: Michel Legrand - Les Desmoiselles De Rochefort, Instrumental Version - UA (pink and orange stereo) Michel Legrand - The Happy Ending - UA (pink and orange, stereo) John Barry - On Her Majesty's Secret Service - UA (pink and orange, stereo).
