Lee Morgan: Indeed! (BN/King Japan)

Lee Morgan at 18(!), C. Sharpe wailing, Philly Joe driving & punctuating, Horace, the steady hand holding things together, & Wilbur Ware, the heartbeat

Ah, yes! The same rhythm team as here:

Yeah - another one of my favorites. Wilbur Ware is especially fine on the Monterose.

MJQ - Fontessa - Atlantic (green and red stereo)

By uncanny coincidence:

MJQ 'The Comedy' (Atlantic blue/green stereo) and 'Space' (UK Apple, stereo)

Before that:

John Coltrane/Pharoah Sanders 'Live In Seattle' (Impulse red/black, 2LP)

Posted

Gene Ammons -- Funky (Prestige, yellow and black NJ)

Elvin Jones--Coaltion (Blue Note, blue and white Liberty)

Dizzy Gillespie--World Statesman (Norgran trumpet)

I've been playing my Piltdown Men 45s

McDonald's cave/Brontaosaurus stomp - Capitol UK

Piltdown rides again/Bubbles in the tar - Capitol UK

A pretty girl is like a melody/Big lizzard - Capitol UK

I think "Piltdown rides again" is still a great R&R/pop single. I posted a youtube version here a few days ago

But I still think that their masterpiece was a joyous arrangement of "A pretty girl is like a melody", done a la David Rose's "The stripper" and a HELLUVA lot better for a stripper to gyrate to. It may only be R&R/pop, but dammit, this is GOOD!

Funny - I didn't know about this band and used to be in a group called the Piltdown Ensemble...

Lester Williams: Texas Troubadour (Ace)

With apologies to Ernest Tubb's band - but the music is fine & so is the remaster job by the late Bob Jones.

First,

Improvisational Arts Quintet - No Compromise! - (Prescription)

Then,

Dennis Gonzalez - Namesake - (Silkheart)

Because I talked to Alvin Fielder today and he's doing well.

Good to hear the news about Mr. Fielder.

Yeah, Alvin's a real force of nature, and a fascinating character/historian of the music. Hopefully he'll be back to playing more regularly again soon - he's been practicing quite a bit, he says.

Now:

Anthony Braxton - Six Compositions (Quartet) 1984 - (Black Saint)

Posted

Richard Groove Holmes--Get Up and Get It (with Teddy Edwards, Pat Martino, Paul Chambers and Billy Higgins) (Prestige, blue label)

Zoot Sims--The Modern Art of Jazz (Dawn)
