Stefan Wood Posted March 28, 2010 Report Posted March 28, 2010 Been listening to some Ed Bickert lately -- in particular, the one with Bob Thompson on Sackville. Like his guitar playing. But I got an lp yesterday that I have never seen -- Victor Feldman's All Stars plays the World's First Album of Soviet Jazz Themes. With Nat Adderley, Harold Land, Joe Zawinul, Frank Butler, Bob Whitlock, Herb Ellis, Carmell Jones. Quote

Dan Gould Posted March 29, 2010 Report Posted March 29, 2010 Looks like I should keep this thread open at all times for the foreseeable future, as I need to transfer a good portion of the LPs I've sold before I ship them away. What's great is that for a long, long time I really got away from digging into the vinyl outside of making transfers on certain LPs right when I got them. So now I will be revisiting a lot of recordings I last heard a long time ago - all the ones that I never transferred (many bought before I could make transfers) give or take the odd dud and anything that was replaced by a CD release. So, up first was: Junior Mance, Holy Mama (Inner City) - once you get past the first track, a bass happy rendition of "By The Time I Get to Phoenix" this is a nice hard swinging record. Now I'm revisiting two Dexters from way back when I was a Dexaholic and not yet the Gene Harris Fanatic. Don't know why I never got this on CD, The Tower of Power is pretty sweet. More Power to follow. Quote

Actually, I like his version of "By the time I get to Phoenix", as well as the rest of the album. It's one of my favourite Mances. Now I'm revisiting two Dexters from way back when I was a Dexaholic and not yet the Gene Harris Fanatic. Don't know why I never got this on CD, The Tower of Power is pretty sweet. More Power to follow. Funny - I was playing them a few days ago. MG Quote
Dan Gould Posted March 29, 2010 Report Posted March 29, 2010 Sorry, but that opening track just does nothing for me. In fact I didn't even save the track for burning, for me, this LP is going to start with "God Bless The Child". To each their own. Quote

jeffcrom Posted March 31, 2010 Report Posted March 31, 2010 45s tonight, starting with some Blue Notes: Bill Henderson with the Jimmy Smith Trio: Ain't No Use/Angel Eyes Freddie Roach: I Know/Googa Mooga Lou Donaldson: Mack the Knife/The Nearness of You Sonny Red: Stay as Sweet as You Are/Bluesville Then on to: Hank Marr: Easy Talk/I Remember New York (Federal) Louis Armstrong: The Beat Generation/Someday (You'll Be Sorry) (MGM) Papa Celestin and His Tuxedo Dixieland Band: Tiger Rag/Darktown Strutters Ball (Columbia - 1953) The Bill Henderson and Papa Celestin are equally cool in their own ways - both were recorded as singles; neither is extracted from an album. I wish Smith and Ray Crawford has gotten some solo space on the Henderson record, though. The Louis disc is from the soundtrack of a late-fifties movie. Quote
