Clunky Posted November 21, 2009 Report Posted November 21, 2009 Woody Shaw 'Blackstone Legacy' (Contemporary 2LP, white label stereo) I really like Woody but this recording doesn't do too much for me (not listened to it for years) Quote
sidewinder Posted November 21, 2009 Report Posted November 21, 2009 (edited) Woody Shaw 'Blackstone Legacy' (Contemporary 2LP, white label stereo) I really like Woody but this recording doesn't do too much for me (not listened to it for years) It's definitely chaotic - but I like it. Much prefer it on vinyl than to CD too. Got to speak briefly years ago with Contemporary producer John Koenig about this session - it was apparently arranged/recorded at very short notice with lack of preparation (which shows at times) and there was a fair bit of 'intoxication'. For me, it makes an interesting contrast with Miles' 'Bitches Brew' from around the same era. Edited November 21, 2009 by sidewinder Quote

sidewinder Posted November 21, 2009 Report Posted November 21, 2009 Yes, the CD version is a hard listen - very harsh. A bit of an over-prominent bass too. Quote

porcy62 Posted November 22, 2009 Report Posted November 22, 2009 (edited) Digging the MoFi Rolling Stones box set, definitely lifeless compared to mono (and stereo) originals, man, I really love those pops and clicks and hum on the old Deccas. Edited November 22, 2009 by porcy62 Quote

Teasing the Korean Posted November 22, 2009 Report Posted November 22, 2009 Gerald Wilson Orchestra 'Everywhere' (Pacific Jazz) Great album. I once had an arrow-themed LP cover display on my wall, and included this, a Junior Mance album on Capitol, and Maynard Ferguson's "Straightaway" LP. NP: Henry Mancini - More Music from Peter Gunn (RCA Living Stereo) Red-tinted cover variation. Quote
Teasing the Korean Posted November 22, 2009 Report Posted November 22, 2009 NP: Michel Legrand - Ice Station Zebra OST - MGM (blue and gold label, stereo) Always hated MGM pressings. Very shrill, no middle or bottom. Quote
Chuck Nessa Posted November 22, 2009 Report Posted November 22, 2009 NP: Michel Legrand - Ice Station Zebra OST - MGM (blue and gold label, stereo) Always hated MGM pressings. Very shrill, no middle or bottom. That would be the mastering, not the pressings. Quote
