jeffcrom Posted August 25, 2009 Report Posted August 25, 2009 Clarke/Boland Big Band - Sax No End (MPS) Damn! I don't know why I never paid any attention to this band before now. Probably because I've had kind of a prejudice against "conventional" modern big bands, as opposed to more esoteric ones like Gil Evans' band. But this is a blast. And where has Derek Humble been all my life? Quote

Better 40 years late than never.... Lots of other great things to recommend. 'All Blues' and the two Ronnie Scott's live recordings on MPS/BASF for sure. And 'All Smiles'/'More Smiles' on MPS. My faves on MPS are actually 'Latin Kaleidoscope' and 'Fellini 712'. Then there's also the Verve 'Changes of Scene' and Black Lion 'At Her Majesty's Pleasure'. Followed by the various Shihab, Boland, Bailey and Sadi projects, some of which have been reissued by Rearward Schema. Wonderful stuff ! Edited August 25, 2009 by sidewinder Quote

Picked up More Smiles on vinyl, and they also had At Her Majesty's Pleasure, which I'll go back for. I have the Oktav CD of Shihab and the Danish Radio Jazz Group - don't know if that's the kind of thing you're talking about. Exploring jazz never ends - ain't it great? Quote
clifford_thornton Posted August 25, 2009 Report Posted August 25, 2009 At Her Majesty's is a hot one! Also, the Griffin "Lady Heavy Bottom's Waltz" is fantastic. Admittedly hoping for some nice Japanese facsimiles to make their way to the surface, because though the Rearwards are a good way to hear some of this music, I've been less impressed with the printing quality on the sleeves and have had one or two warped vinyls. Quote
sidewinder Posted August 26, 2009 Report Posted August 26, 2009 I've been pretty happy with the sound of the Rearward/Schemas on vinyl and haven't had any issues so far with warping or print quality. Sonically, the early ones (e.g. the Strauss 2LP set) were probably the best though. Quote
