Lee Morgan 'Sonic Boom' (King)

Always thought the title track went like mad on that one and was in a different class from the other tracks. Someone - Higgins, I think - is making a lot of "gone" noises on that one. Notice it had a different recording date from the others.

Thanks for reminding me aboout this one Bill and Bob. Disposed of the vinyl years ago but it's a fine session with Fathead being something of a BN wild card. The cds second session withe the three horn front line has some nice sounds too. Higgins is certainly 'gone' on Sonic Boom.

Looks like you've got the RVG edition, Bob. Mine's a Japanese import with only six tracks, all by the quintet, recorded 28 April 1967, except for "Sonic Boom" recorded April 14.

It's the King Japanese vinyl, Bill. I also have a 'Sonic Boom' Conn CD and a 'Rainbow series' LP so I'm well covered on this title.

Art Farmer Quintet; The Time And The Place. UK CBS. (Studio session with dubbed applause)

Have you heard the Mosaic single CD of this one, John? They got the actual live recording.

Joe Albany 'Proto-Bopper' (Spotlite)

Saw Albany playing an upright piano in an upstairs room in a pub in Manchester in the 1970s during a tour organized by Tony Williams of Spotlite records. Albany looked in bad shape physically, which wasn't surprising in view of his misfortunes. Have some lovely Albany with Lester in my collection.

Yes, I remember 'Jazz Journal' doing a writeup at the time of that Joe Albany tour, with at least one interview article. Will have to dig it out. Lots of good stuff on Tony William's Spotlite label from around that time. This particular LP is apparently one of the last copies from his surplus LP stock.

Yes, all my Parker Dials are still in that form.

I forgot to say mine's on CD. Apart from a 10-page booklet in Japanese, it includes what looks like a slightly scaled down copy of the back cover of the Liberty-reissued LP, with only a single line of Japanese and a number added.

It's a cool LP. They've got another one coming out soon on De Stijl, as does Jakob with a new solo LP. His solo set was awesome, of course.

You guys actually pay money for that? :D

Now spinning - Tubby Hayes 'Voodoo EP' (Trunk). It just sneaked in through the mail box.

and damn - the Curse of the Voodoo has struck as the music comes out as a 16rpm afro dirge. Suspect that my deck power supply might have been connected up with a crossed wire after the recent upgrade. Back to store !

Serves me right for insulting Swedish hippies

Cool, so it's out?

Yeah - Can be ordered via the trunk site. From what I'm hearing it's selling pretty fast, so few copies are likely to hit the shops.

Wish I could hear it at 45rpm though !

This morning's spins:

Lee Morgan 'All That Jazz' (UK DJM, 2LP). 'Both/And' live material from 1972, available on CD from Fresh Sounds. I think I prefer the vinyl sound quality of this bootleg. Fine music, of course.

Various artists - 'Black California' (Savoy Reissue series, 2LP). Great opportunity to hear early Dolphy with the Roy Porter Big Band.

Yeah, none are being allowed to the US distributor for Trunk, because I tried to order it through a shop here.

A few minutes ago - J.R. Monterose: The Message (Jaro). A reissue pressing. I like it better than his Blue Note album.

Now - Gerald Wilson Big Band: Moment of Truth (Pacific Jazz). A nice original mono pressing.

Looks like I had/have a drive belt tension issue - have got it to play at 45rpm and it's damn good. Messengers-ish afro instrumental number on side 1, vocal track and straight-ahead instrumental number on side 2. Almost like a Tempo EP. Short but sweet !

Can you post a link to where I can buy this in the US, assuming there are any left?
