sidewinder Posted May 23, 2009 Report Posted May 23, 2009 Re: the grading thing, imagine getting an "EX" of Cecil's Debut in the mail and have a long scratch across one side. Back it goes... Cafe Montmartre? Bummer ! Carmen McRae/Clark-Boland Big Band 'November Girl' (Black Lion) - suprisingly poor quality recording for Lansdowns studio. Or possibly just a bad pressing. Quote
Chalupa Posted May 23, 2009 Report Posted May 23, 2009 The Wizards From Kansas - S/T (Mercury, reissue) Great album, shitty repress. Man, is there anything more MADDENING than opening a new vinyl only to find that it sounds worse than the cd/original beat up LP copy?? I tried cleaning it on my VPI and found it made a slight difference. As the saying goes you can't polish a turd. Alas. Quote

Chalupa Posted May 24, 2009 Report Posted May 24, 2009 (edited) Cluster - Cluster 71 (4 Men With Beards, 180g) Another day and another bad repress. Actually unlike the "Wizards From Kansas" LP this sounded amazing but it had a big dimple at the end of side 3 which caused a loud click for the last 90 seconds of the album. So annoying. What's even more annoying is that I bought both LPs about a month ago and the receipts are long gone so I can't return them. Off to the used record shop I go...... Edit: should read "at the end of side 2..." Edited May 24, 2009 by J.H. Deeley Quote
Chalupa Posted May 25, 2009 Report Posted May 25, 2009 This morning's listening thus far consisted of.. Walt Dickerson Trio - Peace (SteepleChase) Hamilton/Batiste/Carter/Murray - Clarinet Summit (India Navigation) I obtained both in an even trade for the two LPs from yesterday. Quote
clifford_thornton Posted May 25, 2009 Report Posted May 25, 2009 I'd probably listen to either one of those records WAY more than Cluster... New vinyl tends to be on the rough side, in my experience. Even things you think will be "decent" quality, like Numero or Rearward, tend to have scuffs that click on a virgin play. To say nothing of your average Dischord or Matador pressing... Quote
Chalupa Posted May 25, 2009 Report Posted May 25, 2009 Really? Dang, that sucks. If that holds true then pressing quality will kill the vinyl resurgence quicker than you can say"illegal download." Von Freeman - Have No Fear (Nessa, black label) Quote

jeffcrom Posted May 26, 2009 Report Posted May 26, 2009 Hank Mobley - A Slice of the Top (1979 first issue) A little ensemble sloppiness at times, which I guess is why it wasn't released at the time, but who cares? Fabulous music. Quote
