Ellington/Brown: This One's For Blanton (Pablo) A must own with wonderful sound to boot!!! Ellington: Up In Duke's Workshop (Pablo) Love the fairly natural(large) dynamic range on this one. Quote

Leeway Posted January 2, 2005 Report Posted January 2, 2005 Jimmy McGriff- THE WORM- Solid State Blue Note Liberty Get Back/VAI/Abraxas LP (made in Italy-- I can't even begin to fathom the licensing arrangement here, assuming there were any. 180 gram vinyl, excellent sound but spotty surface quality). Quote
wolff Posted January 2, 2005 Author Report Posted January 2, 2005 Get Back has a lot of titles in print, but I've stayed away for the reasons you mention. Basie: 88 Basie Street (Pablo) Sinatra: September of My Years (Nice reissue) Quote
BFrank Posted January 2, 2005 Report Posted January 2, 2005 Interesting choice. An album that is usually underrated. Although I haven't listened to it in a LONG time, I remember thinking it was better than most people gave it credit for. I'll have to give it a spin again sometime soon. (I've only got the vinyl) Quote
paul secor Posted January 2, 2005 Report Posted January 2, 2005 Hank Mobley Quartet/George Wallington Showcase (Blue Note/King - Japan) The Wallington sides are nice, but the Mobley sides - Quote
Leeway Posted January 3, 2005 Report Posted January 3, 2005 Interesting choice. An album that is usually underrated. Although I haven't listened to it in a LONG time, I remember thinking it was better than most people gave it credit for. I'll have to give it a spin again sometime soon. (I've only got the vinyl) Any album with Slick, Balin and Kantner together is worth a listen, and this is a good, even very good, JA album, but not a great one. Commonly available on vinyl, which is how I have my copy. Quote
wolff Posted January 3, 2005 Author Report Posted January 3, 2005 Ran Blake: Rapport Finally, warming up to this one. Quote

paul secor Posted January 3, 2005 Report Posted January 3, 2005 Jimmy Knepper in L.A. (disco mate - Japan) - Probably the record in my collection that best captures the beauty of his tone. Quote
