Gerry Mulligan, The Arranger (CBS)

Gene Krupa Orchestra 1946-47

Elliot Lawrence Orchestra 1949

Gerry Mulligan Orchestra 1957

I've got that LP somewhere - I'll dig it out. I remember Humph once describing one of those arrangements as 'a veritable Fair-Isle sweater'. Very apt !

Now playing: Kenny Wheeler 'Music For Large and Small Ensembles' (ECM 2LP) - LP 1. A masterpiece !

Yes, some delights there; e.g. the saxophone section in the 1957 band which includes Lee Konitz, Hal McKusick, Zoot Sims and (surprise!) Charlie Rouse!

Ludwig Van Beethoven - Sonatas for Piano and Cello - Rostropovich/Richter, Philips box set, mono.

Listening to it I wonder if we really needed 'stereo' for very small ensembles, it sounds just so 'perfect'.
