Teasing the Korean Posted March 12, 2008 Report Posted March 12, 2008 (edited) Best of Bill Evans - Verve (stereo) Nice single-disc sampling of Bill's post-LaFaro, pre-leisure suit period. Edited March 12, 2008 by Teasing the Korean Quote

kh1958 Posted March 13, 2008 Report Posted March 13, 2008 Milt Jackson and Wes Montgomery--Bags and Wes (Riverside Orpheum) I have this but haven't played it in forever. How is it? It's an excellent album. Just like Bags and Hawk, and Bags and Trane. This is also the best sounding Orpheum pressing I've found, heavy vinyl, little surface noise, and vivid sound. Quote

porcy62 Posted March 13, 2008 Report Posted March 13, 2008 (edited) Tommy Flanagan 'The Cats' (New Jazz DG mono). With John Coltrane. I want it. A bit envious. now playing: Thad Jones's BN/UA Mosaic, an astounding transfert/remastering/mastering of the BN 1500 sound. I am really impressed. Ah, yes, the music...Burrell and Thad, Mitchell and Thad...great. Edited March 13, 2008 by porcy62 Quote
sidewinder Posted March 13, 2008 Report Posted March 13, 2008 Tommy Flanagan 'The Cats' (New Jazz DG mono). With John Coltrane. Yep, I want it. A bit envious. It's a pretty good sounding copy, Porcy and in great condition. My understanding is that the majority of copies of this one are very noisy - a real shame. New Jazz's quality control was never one of their strongest points. Quote

sidewinder Posted March 13, 2008 Report Posted March 13, 2008 (edited) My opinion too, but a mono cartridge helps. And what a great session it is. Idrees Sulieman, so under-rated. Kenny Burrell providing a great guitar backing groove (almost Freddie Green-like at times) and the superlative combination of Doug Watkins and Louis Hayes. And as for Coltrane.. Doesn't get better ! Chuck Nessa Posted March 13, 2008 Report Posted March 13, 2008 'Elmo Hope Trio' (HiFi Jazz mono) Used to have the stereo original (silver sticker on the cover). When Contemporary reissued it I told Lester Koenig I preferred the original. He was very hurt. He felt he cut better lp masters than anyone. Quote

Interesting - didn't realise they issued a stereo of this one on Hifi Jazz. Have to say that I prefer this cover art to the Contemporary alternative. The copy I have is marked 'demonstration record - property of manufacturer - not for sale' so I guess I have to send it back to Mr Axelrod? 999 times out of 1000 I think Mr Koenig was correct..
