porcy62
In retrospect, it's hard to believe there was a time when Phil Collins could have been involved in such a cool record.

clifford_thornton
Ornette Coleman - On Tenor - Atlantic, stereo I need a mono pressing, I hate the mix of these stereo's Atlantic. With the Ornettes I have given up on the vinyl and go for the 'Beauty Is A Rare Thing' CD set. Heresy, I know.. I have all but To Whom Who Keeps a Record on LP. Most are stereo, and sound good enough to me. Plus, all of them were less than $10. On deck: Sunny Murray & the Untouchable Factor - Charred Earth - (Kharma) Billy Bang Survival Ensemble - New York Collage - (Anima) The Sunny: more boring than I remembered; the Bang: more amazing than I recalled... I've got it on the Vocalion CD but I really must pick up that vinyl. Find the last track a bit 'routine' though.

Most are stereo, and sound good enough to me. Plus, all of them were less than $10. I premise I am talking about original stereo pressing, I don't know the later reissues. IMHO the instruments are too strongly separated between the two channels: drums and sax on left one, trumpet on right one, bass somewhere in center, though they have a good definition and a correct tone, the music lost some coherence as a whole and a bit of punch, compared to the monos I have. I mean that often Ornette is precisely boxed inside my left loudspeaker and don cherry in the right one. If my memory serves me well, but I should check it out, the worst stereo Atlantic is Monk with Jazz Messengers, Thelonious on one side, the Messengers on the other. The first CD reissue was the same way (pulled from the LP master), they later corrected that on the digipak release...and it makes a WORLD of difference. I have a stereo "audiophile" reissue (Four Men With Beards) pulled from the original LP master, and it's awful. Never found a mono original pressing since I bought the reissue. It's so bothering that I listened to it only a couple of times in my life, and I like the session. BTW a lot of early stereo blues records are even worst: John Lee Hooker or Lightin' Hopkins singing in one loudspeaker and playing guitar in the other one. And I don't understand why they didn't correct that in the early cd reissues. Edited July 14, 2007 by porcy62
