ep1str0phy Posted April 11, 2007 Report Posted April 11, 2007 Marion there looks like something inbetween disinterested in badass--I'd hew toward the latter, as it really seems to fit the music inside. Funny how a lot of old "free" record covers are so urbane--the stuff inside is death. Quote
Soul Stream Posted April 11, 2007 Report Posted April 11, 2007 (edited) Bags & Trane, ..on Atlantic. This LP has always been overshadowed by Trane's other Atlantic sides....but lately I've been listening to it alot. Really amazing.... Edited April 11, 2007 by Soul Stream Quote

clifford_thornton Posted April 12, 2007 Report Posted April 12, 2007 Funny how a lot of old "free" record covers are so urbane--the stuff inside is death. Case in point: nearly all of the America LP jackets (tho the Shorter and Emergency are pretty damn ruff). Quote

ep1str0phy Posted April 12, 2007 Report Posted April 12, 2007 I love the Howard+Wright+Few+(etc.) group like no one's business. I actually prefer it to the one sans Howard but with Silva, if only because Howard seemed to bring out the most aggressive elements of Wright's playing. Quote
clifford_thornton Posted April 13, 2007 Report Posted April 13, 2007 I think they're a great combo, esp. if you mean by "aggressiveness" an aggressive flow of ideas, which Howard definitely brought out in the Reverend. Durium Posted April 13, 2007 Report Posted April 13, 2007 (edited) Yeah, tell me about it. It's one of my favorite Marion sides, precisely because it's totally unhinged... Bennink is like a scrap-heap being thrown down the White House stairs! Considering that it's the same vintage as both New Acoustic Swing Duo and the Loevendie/Altena/Engels trio Stairs! (Artone [& Bennink got his bag more from Johnny Engels early on, then incorporated Milford]), the shit that MMH unleash is not surprising, and quite welcome. Strange that the CD issue pairs it with only half of the Creative Improvisation Ensemble LP. I especially like the original Porto Novo cover: I had this one ages ago in my collection - somewhere in the late 1960s - early 1970s when I often visited concerts with Han Bennink.
