clifford_thornton Posted April 1, 2007 Report Posted April 1, 2007 Per Henrik Wallin Trio - s/t - (Caprice) featuring Erik Dahlback (d) and Torbjorn Hultcrantz (b), a very fine breakneck runthrough of the piano-trio tradition (at least from bop to free) done by three of Sweden's finest improvisers (Wallin's RIP). michel1969 Posted April 2, 2007 Report Posted April 2, 2007 John Coltrane 'Live at the Village Vanguard Again! (Impulse, orange, stereo) Everytime i listen to the "Favourite Things Vanguard again" version, i have the impression that Coltrane actually DOESN'T want to play the "too famous" opening theme or CANNNOT play it. He's like "forced" to play the theme, but tries to hide into scales, cries, etc...I think it feels almost painful. it hurts him. Its really impressive. Quote
clifford_thornton Posted April 2, 2007 Report Posted April 2, 2007 He was contracted to play it by some clubs. There's a story that Burton Greene tells in his autobiography about Trane playing a gig where Frank Wright was in the audience. The group stopped their set, and the clubowner got pissed and refused to pay because Trane was contracted to play the tune. So he brings the band back on stage, they play the theme, and Trane says "Frank Wright, sit in!" Frank blows furiously for several minutes, then Trane plays the theme, and they collect their dough. Burton could tell the story better, but it's funny/strange either way... Quote
