Junior Mance Trio (with Ron Carter and Mickey Roker)--Happy Time (Jazzland)--Terrific performance and fine engineering, coupled with a beautiful sounding pressing. (Yesterday's happy find.)

Walt Dickerson/Sun Ra 'Impressions of a Patch of Blue' (MGM mono)

How is this? The actual soundtrack for "A Patch of Blue" is often listed as a favorite by Jerry Goldsmith fans, but it's never done that much for me.

It's a great session. Well worth while. It strays rather far from "program music" or a "concept record," and the rhythm section of Bob Cunningham and Roger Blank give it a tighter groove than some of Dickerson's other sessions from the period.

Joe Pass - The Stones Jazz

All Rolling Stones covers!

on World Pacific.

Weird stuff

I just got this! I was kind of expecting this to be a cheesefest, but it's amazing how straight they're playing it! Some of the arrangements make them almost unrecognizable as Stones tunes! I love "Lady Jane" and "I am Waiting!" It sounds like late 60s/early 70s TV music! Which is a good thing, of course!

Anthony Braxton - Alto Saxophone Improvisations 1979 - Arista. Been having tracking problems with the ends of sides. :( New needle too.

Good stuff anyway.

That problem goes away if you put a nickel on the cartridge, y'know. ;)

The rhythm section of Bob Cunningham and Roger Blank is outstanding. A fascinating album - Ra also plays a bit of spooky celeste (which sounds more like harpsichord to me).
