Peter Lemer - Local Colour - (ESP orig)

Unusual example of a Brit getting a session on ESP. Used to hear him a lot on BBC Jazz Club sessions back in the day - his wife Pepi was featured quite a lot too.

Yeah, they seemed like an interesting pair. I wish he'd recorded more, though... just two examples, right?

I've only heard of the ESP. Which is the other?

Continuing a Garrick-heavy weekend:

Michael Garrick Quintet 'Poetry In Jazz In Concert, Vols 1 and 2' (UK Argo mono). With Joe Harriott and Shake Keane.

Then for a total change of scene:

Grant Green 'Feelin' The Spirit' (BN NY USA mono)

He's on the SME on Marmalade, as is Pepi...

--the one with the extended, occasionally plodding Ayler dedication(?) I'm generally responsive to larger UK-free workouts, but I'm not sure that that one comes off that well in toto. Still, when the voices kick in above that martial cadence, it's mesmerizing.

-edit to make an interrogative...

I'm thinking of "Let's Sing for Him" on SME Big Band & Quintet (Konnex--I have the CD issue) which did, incidentally, feature Pete Lemer (not sure about Pepi, as my CD is in a different part of the state right now). Is the Konnex the same as the Marmalade?

Yep, looks like they're different recordings. The Konnex CD is half a large group side with multiple pianos and a full chorus doing a post-Aylerian march, half the small group sides with "Bass Is", "Coleman", and "The Bird". From what I can gather, the LP (which I've never seen and have no information about, although I'd assume it is a double-LP... I'd check the online Stevens discography but it looks wonky right now) is the same thing.

The CD contains extra material, I believe. That LP was originally issued as a single on the Vinyl label, as Live Big Band and Quartet. I've never owned this one.

Big John mini-Fest:

Big John Patton 'Oh Baby !' (BN NY USA stereo with ear in a mono sleeve  )

Harold Vick 'Steppin' Out' (BN NY USA mono)

Big John Patton 'Along Came John' (BN NY USA stereo with ear).

Then on to the BJP Mosaic Select..
