Do you think I have to give it another chance? Yes. It is heavy. Like a lead brick. Oh--and props to TtK for Natural Black Inventions. Love that one. Listening to Jacques Coursil's The Way Ahead, and I'm bowled over. Never knew it was this (I suppose I always expected a BYG blowout, and not something so tremendously subtle and nuanced...). Quote

porcy62 Posted January 16, 2007 Report Posted January 16, 2007 (edited) Grant Green GREEN IS BEAUTIFUL, BN liberty. Maybe Green is beautiful, but I couldn't say the same for his version of 'A Day In A Life' ARGHHH! Edited January 16, 2007 by porcy62 Quote
porcy62 Posted January 16, 2007 Report Posted January 16, 2007 (edited) Gabor Szabo JAZZ RAGA Impulse! mono. I love this bizarre pastiche, and the cover with Gabor playing sitar on the Vespa remind me Peter Sellers's Hollywood Party, Great! Sorry, I read on liner notes that's a Lambretta, not a Vespa, very mod! And if Quentin Tarantino will listen to it, I am sure they will use some of the tracks in the next movie. I must have all his Impulse! output. I want them! Edited January 16, 2007 by porcy62 Quote

Teasing the Korean Posted January 17, 2007 Report Posted January 17, 2007 Forget Star Wars. This is the stuff you need to hear, right up there with "Peter Gunn" and the other memorable private eye jazz. Original 6-eye mono copy. Quote
ep1str0phy Posted January 17, 2007 Report Posted January 17, 2007 Shadow Vignettes: Birth of A Notion -AACM free-funk/groove (composed/arranged by Edward Wilkerson Jr.) with some questionable rap flourishes. The spirit of the ensemble (featuring a brutal Ernest Dawkins, Ari Brown, Steve Berry, Yosef Ben Israel, Reggie Nicholson, and Kahil El'Zabar, among others) carries it off, though. Quote

Have not heard this soundtrack album but I'm happy with this Shelly Manne Contemporary: (with Conte Candoli, Richie Kamuca, Russ Freeman and Chuck Berghofer) Can't read the title. Is it Shelly's take on the "Checkmate" music? I have some of his "Peter Gunn" albums. Quote

Teasing the Korean Posted January 17, 2007 Report Posted January 17, 2007 A slightly better view of the Shelly Manne Checkmate cover on Contemporary Records/OJC: Thanks for this; never knew it existed. Williams' own album of Checkmate is worth tracking down. Really superb arrangements. Quote
