His interaction with the audience was compelling. Glad to hear that. I enjoyed Iverson's playing with the Bad Plus. But I think his solo work -- and sideman gigs with Tootie and Jabali -- are even better. Quote
HutchFan Posted April 30 Report Posted April 30 NP: Such a great record. One of Joe Farrell's finest hours, imo. Quote

HutchFan Posted April 30 Report Posted April 30 Now spinning: Nancy Wilson - Now I'm a Woman (Capitol, 1970) Nancy Wilson keeping up with the times. New decade, new sound. For this album, she hired the Gamble & Huff production team (including arrangers Bobby Martin and Thom Bell) to make a Soul-oriented record with the "Philadelphia International" sound. Wilson is like Stanley Turrentine. She always sounds comfortable -- fully inside the music -- in nearly any context. Jazz, blues, soul, pop. It doesn't matter. Quote

I remember on the old Blue Note bulletin board when Greg Maltz used to go on & on about this needing to be reissued on CD. It was even funnier when it came out in the Mosaic box and he still wanted it out separately so we could get the full artwork. Quote
jazzbo Posted May 1 Report Posted May 1 I wonder if he ever picked up one of the Japanese releases. Lord knows with the fruit of his inventive work he can now afford it. Quote

HutchFan Posted May 1 Report Posted May 1 NP: This 1976 LP is a re-titled version of What's New!!!, which Roulette first released in 1966. The original title speaks to the fact that Stitt uses a new-at-the-time Varitone sax throughout. Back in 2011, Marc Myers wrote an interesting blogpost about Stitt's use of the Varitone. It's worth a look, if the Stitt and/or Varitone saxes interest you. 4 hours ago, jazzcorner said: Norgran MG N-1094 - Buddy DeFranco " Odalisque" - rec. 1953 (A) / 1954 (B) I may be repeating myself (!) -- but I really dig that cover. It's striking. Simple but potent. That type of design can look dated (not unpleasantly so, but you know what I'm saying). This one still looks fresh. I bet the music is good too. Quote

Good coverart is very important for me too but seldom seen these days. I may refer to DSM on CLEF/NORGRAN & Verve. The music inside is excellent. Edited May 2 by jazzcorner Quote
