"Knowledge Of Self" also a testament for the capabilities of rather unsung bassplayer Greg Maker .... btw "art director" Reggie Workman could give some input how to record a bass appropriately for sure 😎 ....

Once upon a time when I still had vinyl, there was a solo bass LP called The Works Of Workman on Denon (I think).

You're right .... it's a terrific showcase for Reggie Workman feat an outerwordly performance of "Samba de Orfeu" .... to my knowledge never reissued on CD ....

Never on CD, or I would have repurchased it. Sold all of my vinyl 20+ years ago.

Another jewel in the crown of Denon regarding bass recordings is Randy Weston-Vishnu Wood Duo "Perspective" from 1977 .... the bass solo track "Khadesha" is defying description .... this actually saw CD release in 1989 and is available via Discogs for little money 🧐🤓 ....

I coudln´t say I am a FAN of any label, but I´m sure I have some Archie Shepp from that label, because in the late 70´s I had seen him live , I think it was with the genial Siegfried Kessler,  a german who became a parisian, on bass I think there was Bob Cunningham and on drums was Clifford Jarvis, and it was after the free period. Shepp and Sanders went back to classic acoustic quartets with p,b,dr, there were a lot of that stuff in the recordstores, but very expensive.

But was not most of Max Roach from that late 70´s also on Denon ?

Gil Fuller and the Monterey Jazz Orchestra with James Moody, Night Flight (Pacific Jazz)

Jesse Fuller, San Francisco Bay Blues (Prestige)

Denon, Baystate, Horo, Fluid, Victor, Soul Note is what I have for Max of that period.

don't forget the two Bridgewater Brothers LPs... very nice Denon sessions in great sound.

For me "Lightning And Thunder" the stronger session with the excellent Rhythm Section Stanley Cowell + Reggie Workman + Michael Carvin on board .....
