George Coleman - Ronnie Scott's Presents George Coleman Live (Pye). Great record. Whoever recorded this did a great job too.

Saw that group at their next Club visit, with Herbie Lewis in place of Ray Drummond. Coleman was phenomenal in that period.

In listening to this record, I was reminded of the many times I managed to see/hear George live. It also reminded me that as great of a tenor player George was/is, that circular breathing thing, which shows up a couple of times on this record, is kinda boring. It was really cool the first time I saw/heard it but by the 2nd or 3rd time, I was more like "eh". He basically does the same thing with it every time. No matter, it doesn't ruin this record at all and George does play his ass off. Higgins is pretty good too.

Yes, the circular breathing technique was very prominent in those gigs. Over 2-3 years I caught several appearances by the Quartet plus two I think by the Octet so he was a frequent visitor (Ronnie Scott was a personal fan I think). Billy Higgins almost seemed like a fixture, as he appeared each time with Cedar Walton’s group as well. Happy days !

The Octet had an interesting lineup. Danny Moore, Mario Riviera plus Frank Strozier on at least one occasion. Not to forget Harold Mabern and Iris Muhammed as well.

Mongo Santamaria - Dawn (Amanecer) (Vaya, 1977)

That*s a nice album with some very pretty tracks along some down home funky music. I love the opener "Happy as a fat rat in a cheese factory".

Sebesky's "more is more" approach to arranging often doesn't appeal to me, but -- on this album -- the arrangements don't feel overblown.  They're still big and cinematic and very much of the time.  But they work, IMO.

As for Jackie's voice, she's still got me in her grip, regardless of the setting. ;)

EDIT (after listening a bit more):
Well... maybe the arrangements are a little bit overblown.  :P   But I still dig the music.

How about her bebop contribution in the Charlie Ventura concert with Roy Kral?
