Parkertown Posted September 25, 2006 Report Posted September 25, 2006 The Hawk Flies High - from the mid-70 Milestone two-fer "The Hawk Flies." Great music, scary-ass cover photo of Hawk letting cigarette smoke ooze from his mouth. Yuck! Quote
slide_advantage_redoux Posted September 25, 2006 Report Posted September 25, 2006 The Hawk Flies High - from the mid-70 Milestone two-fer "The Hawk Flies." Great music, scary-ass cover photo of Hawk letting cigarette smoke ooze from his mouth. Yuck! I bought that on cassette from a street vendor in Switzerland in 1979, and there were no liner notes on it at all. It took me a few years of listening to finally identify the cornet player as being Thad Jones. I always enjoyed that tape. Great tunes and playing. Quote
Parkertown Posted September 25, 2006 Report Posted September 25, 2006 Sorry s/a/r, but no Thad on this set. The trumpet player for the Hawk Flies High set, as listed in the notes, is Idrees Sulieman. Here's the AMG listing... http://www.allmusic.com/cg/amg.dll?p=amg&a...10:xux8b5b4bsqh Quote

Peter Johnson Posted September 26, 2006 Report Posted September 26, 2006 Freddy Hubbard, "Here to Stay" (DMM Pressing--sounds pretty damn good, I have to say!) Quote
Parkertown Posted September 26, 2006 Report Posted September 26, 2006 I've got that one too, Peter. And I agree. I also recently got "Hub-Cap" as a sealed DMM pressing and it's super sounding as well. Quote
Parkertown Posted September 26, 2006 Report Posted September 26, 2006 Last nite, before bedtime: Bill Evans - Trio '64 - Verve stereo - an original, I think... This morning: Bill Evans Trio - How My Heart Sings! - Riverside black label stereo. Is this an original? Quote

Chuck Nessa Posted September 26, 2006 Report Posted September 26, 2006 You Get More Bounce with Curtis Counce Recently listened to my vinyl of this fine session called Counceltation. In 1972 Lester Koenig repressed the lp with a new title and cover - great color shot of Curtis on the street outside the Contemporary offices. I wish they'd reissue a 24 bit of this date with the politically correct (and better) cover. Concord could do worse than a set of the Counce Contemporaries. Quote
