I justified the price to myself by using Amex points. It is an impeccable pressing with very fine sound.

I have an original and it's a wonderful album. If you can spring for a high quality reissue, do so.

Yeah, same here. Haven’t done a careful check between the two versions yet but suspect that there’s not much in it. Alas, my deck is out of action pending some servicing so it’s CD only at the moment.

David Murray trio - The Hill [Black Saint, Italy 1988]

a post by @ghost of mileselsewhere reminded me about this LP.  Murray was one of my entry points to Jazz and I hoovered up the the Black Saints. This takes me back.

It's a doozy. :tup

and will therefore be appearing in your 80s blog no doubt :)

Actually, I picked another one of Murray's albums.  He made a TON of records during the 80s.  Lots to choose from!

I'll be very interested to see which one got the nod

I considered several -- including The Hill -- but, in the end, I chose the Murray album that I've known the longest.

Like you described, it was an album that left a BIG impression early in my process of discovering jazz.

Now spinning:

Cuber sure does make a fantastic sound on the bari.

I bought it in the 70´s, I don´t have many of that silver cover series, maybe "Ornette Coleman´s Free Jazz" and "Mingus Blues and Roots", and for more easy listening the then very popular "Les McCann Eddie Harris Montreux 1969".
At that time I  was astonished that "Avantgarde" was quite traditional, it´s all straight ahead swing, and they don´t really go "far out". But this was still in 1960, when there was still a lot of the old hard bop. But they all sound wonderful, "The Blessing" is one of the most traditional compositions of Coleman, also a very interesting version of it is on the 1958 Hillcrest Club recording, sometimes released under the leadership of Paul Bley, though he is barely audible on those.
Both Trane and Cherry loved "Bemsha Swing". Trane played it with Monk, and Don recorded it on several occasions....

They get really sticky and worn. Not a big fan, although I've picked some up. They sound fine, at least.
