Mike Taylor Quartet - Preparation [Sunbeam Records, 2021]

very nicely produced release. Obviously a labour of love. Now for a Pendulum reissue - this label did the CD reissue so maybe

‘Pendulum’ CD reissue got pulled super fast because of a tape rights issue. Universal weren’t happy. I was lucky to snag it when I saw it, they did a nice job on the sound. I suspect Decca will reissue it in the next year or so.

That booklet which came with the Sunbeam LP is superb, effectively a mini biography. A fine release.

I didn't realise that, thanks.  I had simply imagined that a limited run had been snagged by the likes of your good self and no-one was selling it on,. The music on 'Preparation' is fascinating and the booklet is one of the best I've seen better even the SS's in the Tubby box, dare I say.

Decca are really creating expectations, let's hope this reissue campaign doesn't fizzle like previous ones.

The story with the ‘Pendulum’ CD reissue is that the Lansdowne Studio tape master was used, not the copy held by Universal, who pulled the plug when they found out.

Do you know who's behind Sunbeam and their access to the Taylor recordings? (I haven't read the booklet yet so apologies if the answer is in there).

Second listen completed. It's a really good release. Thanks for your recommendation on the SQ a week or so ago which made my mind up.

I think it is Richard Morton Jack who is behind Sunbeam. He also put out the ‘Galactic Ramble’ book. RMJ also did the fine Taylor essay in the booklet. The latest recordings seem to have been supplied from Tony Reeves’ home collection.

The more I listen to this LP, the more I like it.  Always a good sign.

Is this one good / what's it like? I've seen this many times but never knew what to make of it

If you how Jackie Davis plays the Hammond and enjoy it, you can buy this. If not ..... sound is excellent, and Irving Ashby and Milt Holland play tastefull accompaniment.

iIf you dig Davis, you may fare better with either of the two double CD reissues, both sound good:

Both include Jumpin' Jackie but otherwise do not overlap. Listen to some samples. If you like his organ style, which comes from Fats Waller and Milt Buckner and has almost nothing in common with the newer Jimmy Smith followers, then you will enjoy it. Otherwise, you will think it is corny.
