paul secor Posted August 13, 2006 Report Posted August 13, 2006 Sir Douglas Quintet: The Return of Doug Saldana (Philips) - I recently heard from a musician friend that Rocky Morales, the tenor saxophonist who played those soulful saxophone solos on so many Doug Sahm records had died recently. I hope that's not so, but my friend got the news from a musician who had played with Rocky, so it's probably true. I played this record in his memory - his playing on "She's Huggin' You, but She's Lookin' at Me" and "Wasted Days, Wasted Nights" was my introduction to his playing 35 years ago, and his tenor has given me a lot of pleasure over the years. I had forgotten that Rocky Morales had signed my copy of this record when he was on tour with Doug Sahm. Autographs don't mean a lot to me these days, but this one added some memories while I was listening today. Quote
clifford_thornton Posted August 14, 2006 Report Posted August 14, 2006 Miles - Live at Fillmore (Columbia) If you can believe it, there is a deep groove on one side of each LP. Not quite in the same league as Live-Evil or Black Beauty, but solid music nonetheless. This was an interesting band. Quote
clifford_thornton Posted August 14, 2006 Report Posted August 14, 2006 Charles Moffett - The Gift (Savoy original) Paul Jeffrey is particularly awesome on this... Quote
clifford_thornton Posted August 14, 2006 Report Posted August 14, 2006 Vinny Golia - Openhearted (Nine Winds) with Baikaida Carroll, Roberto Miranda, Nels and Alex Cline you can't really go wrong... Golia is a hell of a reed player, and quite a composer too. Quote
