Is that also on your Blue Note reissue of the Pacific Jazz label? Yes, the stuff with young Freddie Hubbard is also on my BN reissue. Wasn´t this Freddie´s first recording session ? Quote

In that instance, vinyl was certainly a plus. Memory checking myself (because that's something I NEED to do a lot these days), Ask The Ages was originally released on CD (and cassette!), there was no Axiom LP? Or was there? I see the CD was AAD, so ok, maybe there's not a lot (or anything?) lost by returning it to analog...if they've gone back to the analog session/mixing tapes. Did they do that? Or are they just making an LP of the CD? Still can't believe that the CD is no longer in print. That's just immoral. Quote

JSngry Posted March 12, 2021 Report Posted March 12, 2021 What was Laswell's label prior to Axiom, Celluloid? Is that the order? I definitely remember Laswell LPs on one of his labels, but I think it was Celluliod. So, did Hive Mind make the LP from analog sources? If so, I might like to hear the LP, it might actually sound better than the CD, or, at least, different, in a not-bad way. But if they used digital source tapes...neve mind, none for me, thanks. Dub Modal Posted March 12, 2021 Report Posted March 12, 2021 I don't know about Celluloid, but there's some LPs and vinyl promo singles on Axiom. Looking through that label on discogs now and there's some interesting albums... Quote
JSngry Posted March 12, 2021 Report Posted March 12, 2021 Laswell put out a LOT of records back in the day, on both Celluloid & Axiom, a lot of them quite interesting and almost all of them with one or more players in the mix you might not expect to find. The Tabla Beat Science records are particularly wonderful. and I got it backward - Celluloid came before Axiom and was not Laswell's label, although he was a driving force there. And between the two labels, there's an entire musical culture going on that was vey well documented. This on, should be an All-time Classic instead of an underground classic: Quote

Bought it out of the used bins for a few bucks a couple of years ago, amazed by who was involved as listed on the back. Quote
JSngry Posted March 12, 2021 Report Posted March 12, 2021 Yeah, I remember it got a few heavy reviews, but then nothing. It seems to be one of those records that people have found and immediately lock in with or else go through life never even hearing of it. Funny how that works sometimes... Quote

Celluloid was run by Jean Georgakarakos of BYG fame. I assume the Hive Mind is from a digital source; my copy is now buried in pre-move boxes. Quote
JSngry Posted March 12, 2021 Report Posted March 12, 2021 So...digital on an LP...that's kind of why CDs became the thing, wasn't it? Cutting out that analog filter middleman. I mean, I am coming to appreciate (if not completely understand) the object-ness of the "vinyl revival", but from an objective (no pun intended) standpoint...just not feeling a need, myself. Now, if somebody still has the AA part of the AAD chain, and wanted to work with that, hey, let's play that game, because the digital quality process did not evolve nearly as adroitly as did the marketplace process...it got there, eventually, but...that's another story. People confused lack of tape hiss with "better sound" and god, look at all the truly shitty sounding records we got stuck with. Bottom line, though - it's an amazing record, and it's great that it's getting back out there. Quote

I don't have any doubt it is, just like all of the Sun Ra reissues on LP have a digital step in the chain. These days it seems safe to assume that unless it's advertised as AAA, it ain't. And for this particular album I think that AAA would be impossible anyway. 38 minutes ago, JSngry said: Bottom line, though - it's an amazing record, and it's great that it's getting back out there. Maybe all the remixes, just seems like the kind of guy who keeps stuff around. I could be totally wrong. Quote

Usually in the last set, at some point McCoy would raise the intensity to such a high level, his playing seemed to defy the limitations of the piano and become some other instrument. Seeing McCoy Tyner a couple of times a year, that is something I really miss. Jimmy Ponder, So Many Stars (Milestone) Urban Green 6-Tet (Command/Pathe Marconi) Quote
