HutchFan Posted January 16, 2021 Report Posted January 16, 2021 NP: Chico Freeman - Peaceful Heart, Gentle Spirit (Contemporary, 1980) with James Newton, Jay Hoggard, Kenny Kirkland, Buster Williams, and Billy Hart Every bit as good as you'd expect, given the line-up. I'm pleased because I'm able to listen to vinyl again. My stereo system has been unavailable because we installed some new carpet in the basement a couple months ago. Everything had to be dis-assembled and moved elsewhere. Between work, family commitments, a presidential election, a senate run-off election, and a Capitol Hill riot (plus all the attendant news watching), I haven't had the energy or inclination to put it all back together. But I finally did today. Here's what it looks like now: Equipment-wise, it's nothing spectacular. Mostly old but reliable stuff. Even so, I've got to say that music sounds SO MUCH better on this system compared to a smartphone & earbuds or my little Bose Bluetooth device. 16 minutes ago, bresna said: Lou Donaldson - Alligator Boogaloo (Blue Note). This is the 80th anniversary pressing. Nicely done by Kevin Gray and pressed at Pallas in Germany. Love that whole album -- but my single favorite cut is "One Cylinder" !!! Quote

Pim Posted January 17, 2021 Report Posted January 17, 2021 @Rabshakeh Pretty good record this is but nothing that blows you away probably. It’s a bit weird in places: some funk, freebop and spoken word. Something that needs a few listens. But definitely interesting music! Quote
Niko Posted January 17, 2021 Report Posted January 17, 2021 I for one am a big fan of Jouney into Nigritia... Quote

A good example of thie rewards of this board as I would never have come across it if Jeffcrom (whatever happened to him?) hadn't posted it years ago. I need to listen to it, thanks for the reminder. I'm playing LP 1 of this 'I Talk With The Spirits' is in my top ten all time Jazz LPs. This is my first listen to this remaster. Pim Posted January 17, 2021 Report Posted January 17, 2021 Tapscott, Tapscott, Tapscott.... been listening quite a lot to him these days and I think this is going to be my favorite. What a great musician! Quote

Indeed! I miss jeffcrom, learned a lot from him, both from his posts here and from his blog... and yes, it took a while until I saw a copy of this album, and without this board I would never have known that this something I must have ... I honestly think that you can't go wrong with Tapscott, I've never heard a poor album by him yet, or even an average one There's a new 3LP issue due on Nimbus West which will be a 'must buy' https://www.discogs.com/Horace-Tapscott-Pan-Afrikan-Peoples-Arkestra-Live-At-Century-City-Playhouse-9979/release/16330602 Promo here Good to see you still have a nice bit of spare storage in that nice looking unit. What a great musician! Memories of attending Tapscott’s ‘wake’ performance in LA. It was billed as a fund raising tribute to help him with hospital treatment. They announced on the day from the stage that he had sadly passed away just the night before so it turned out to be a memorial. As well as the Arkestra there was Pharoah Sanders, Vi Redd and the Watts Prophets in the lineup that I can remember. Gerald Wilson and his family were sat right behind me. Quote

Checked up my old post on this on the ‘Tapscott’ thread and Bobby Bradford was also in the lineup. I remember Gary Bias and Roberto Miranda in the Arkestra as well. Board Member Adam was also in the audience that day, per his post. It seems largely to have been something of an ‘Arkestra Friends and Family’ thing so we were lucky to have attended. Quote

mjazzg Posted January 17, 2021 Report Posted January 17, 2021 Now onto 'Slightly Latin'. Remaster seems less of an improvement on this one. I really like this album although I get the impression that it's not generally well-regarded. Previously 'Rip, Rig and Panic', a stone-cold classic sounding as good as I've ever heard it 4 minutes ago, sidewinder said: Checked up my old post on this on the ‘Tapscott’ thread and Bobby Bradford was also in the lineup. I'm not aware of any UK gigs since 'bout 1990 ,which is when I probably became fully aware of him, are you? Girding myself for the reply that I missed a week's residency in 1987... Quote

Never saw him myself either. I was abroad in 1990 and the one chance I did get, a rare solo piano recital in Western Canada circa 1994, I missed ! (Not sure why, might have been on business). Admission was something daft like $8 too, very low profile appearance during the Canadian Summer Festival season. Was hoping to put that right in the late 90s, sadly not to be. His spirit was well and truly there though ! Continuing the Mosaic vinyl theme du jour, selections of this one followed by the J J Johnson Columbia vinyl set. 31 minutes ago, mjazzg said: Now onto 'Slightly Latin'. A sort of cheesy approach, yes - but full of surprise and good humour. Some good playing on there by the likes of Martin Banks and - especially - Horace Parlan. Kevin Bresnahan Posted January 17, 2021 Report Posted January 17, 2021 Bobby Hutcherson - Oblique (Blue Note/Tone Poet). The way people are raving about the sound on this over on the Hoffman forums, I was expecting to be blown away. Chambers' cymbals are recorded sizzling hot on this record. If I had to guess why this wasn't released when it was recorded, I would guess that this is the reason. I would not rate this that highly for sonics. The music is great though. Quote
