Max Roach / Art Blakey - Percussion Discussion (Chess)
2-LP reissue from the 1970s.  My version even has a cut-out notch, just like the cover in the photo above.

Now listening to sides 3 and 4, originally issued as MAX (Cadet 623) in 1958, as shown below:

Max Roach Quintet - with Kenny Dorham, Hank Mobley, Ramsey Lewis, and George Morrow

It's quite a change in cover art, isn't it? The vibe of the original photograph is amazing. Then the move to the stark pink/white/black colour scheme of the reissue.

I definitely prefer the original cover.  But the Chess reissue was MUCH less expensive.  ... Plus, the Blakey LP is an added bonus. ;)

I didn´t know Ramsey Lewis played with Max Roach. I only saw him once and I think that was more easy listening Music, as much as I recall…..

I think I'd describe most of Ramsey Lewis' music as Soul Jazz.  But he's in a straight-ahead mode on this Roach date.

Spinning this again:

Max Roach / Art Blakey - Percussion Discussion (Chess)

Now listening to sides 1 and 2, originally issued as Art Blakey's Tough! (Cadet 4049), as shown below:

Recorded in '57 but not released until '66.

McLean is clearly the dominant voice.  It's always great to hear Jackie -- even if he's a few years from his phenomenal run in the 1960s.

Curtis Counce - You Get More Bounce With Curtis Counce (Analogue Productions 33 rpm). This is a nice, swinging date that I've always liked. This Analogue Productions LP sounds incredible. Butler's drums sound particularly crisp. They really did a nice job with the tapes.

I have a cd with that cover and a Contemporary lp from the '70s with this cover -
