Chuck Nessa Posted June 10, 2020 Report Posted June 10, 2020 Got this in 1966 or 67 when I worked at the Jazz Record Mart. It still sounds terrific. Quote
clifford_thornton Posted June 10, 2020 Report Posted June 10, 2020 never encountered that particular SABA release; will have to keep an eye out for it. Quote

Another advantage of age. My grandparents bought original Jelly Roll Morton Victors. And I got it around the same time as the George Russells, but I sold them when I got the cd. chewy-chew-chew-bean-benitez Posted June 11, 2020 Report Posted June 11, 2020 the difference is extremely noticeable wes's guitar is centered and focused, and so is the rest. its a balanced direct sound. the stereo is more open and airy and the music "floats"- i have two ears but only one brain, but mono greatly improves this albums sound, specifcally on Wes's guitar, I can actually hear it now. sidewinder Posted June 12, 2020 Report Posted June 12, 2020 (edited) Tone Poet version. Not the ‘in your face’ excitement or sonic saturation of the DG original version but a bit more detail is apparent. Pretty damn good ! Edited June 12, 2020 by sidewinder Quote
sidewinder Posted June 12, 2020 Report Posted June 12, 2020 Another Tone Poet. This one is tremendous. Quote

Maybe it'll still be there when they reopen this fall. I have the "complete" cd version too, but I find it's too much: false starts, chat, etc,. Plus the essays on the booklet aren't really much enlightening, so I got this one and I am going to sell the cd box set. BTW the japanese vinyl is top notch in my copy, dead quiet like a cd. Quote
clifford_thornton Posted June 12, 2020 Report Posted June 12, 2020 yeah, I don't even have enough room for any more boxed sets, but this seems essential. The other Japanese Verve set I have, the Bird one, is dead silent indeed. Quote
