Clunky Posted February 27, 2019 Report Posted February 27, 2019 Clare Fischer————Music inspired by the Kinetic Sculptures of Don Conard Mobiles————-(CF Records) Think Sun Ra soloing on a synth and you pretty much get the idea of what’s on offer here. CF Records seems to be a part of Revelation Records judging by the text on the sleeve. This and Great White Hope! offer up a very different side to the adventurous Fischer. Quote

Sounds fascinating. I have most of Fischer's LPs, but not that one. I would love for Mosaic to produce a set that rounds up Fischer's Revelation recordings. They deserve wider exposure, IMO. . . From a commercial point of view, I suppose such a set wouldn't be viable for Mosaic. But I'd buy it in a heartbeat. Quote

I picked up a bunch of Fischer sides on Revelation/MPS and Discovery (jazzhouserecords.co.uk) Some solo stuff, lots with Gary Foster and his sort of Latin group- Salsa Picante. There’s not a dud amongst them. Quote

chewy-chew-chew-bean-benitez Posted February 28, 2019 Report Posted February 28, 2019 this just went up on ebay- what the hell is it, which of the hell of you will buy it? Quote
clifford_thornton Posted February 28, 2019 Report Posted February 28, 2019 I've enjoyed Masuo's playing on Sadao Watanabe-related records. Quote
jeffcrom Posted February 28, 2019 Report Posted February 28, 2019 Modern Jazz Festival (Harmony). I originally sought out this collection of 1956-57 tracks because it has one of the rarest early Steve Lacy tracks - his appearance on "Give Me the Simple Life" by the Joe Puma Sextet. (The other issued tune from the session, "Indian Blanket," was even harder to find - only issued on a French anthology. Both tracks are now out there on European PD CDs.) But there are many other pleasures on this album - Randy Weston, Zoot Sims, The Jazz Modes - and I enjoy this one every time I spin it. Quote

paul secor Posted February 28, 2019 Report Posted February 28, 2019 Don't have that one, but I always enjoy listening to Curtis Fuller. Quote
mikeweil Posted February 28, 2019 Report Posted February 28, 2019 (edited) Side two has Gerry Mulligan and Bud Shank with synthesizer, harp, and the grand organ of the Grace Cathedral, where it was recorded. Perhaps one of the least known items in the two saxists' discographies. Faintly reminds me of Paul Horn's Inside LPs. Mulligan's baritone in the cavern of that Catheral with its seven seconds decay is something else. Edited February 28, 2019 by mikeweil Quote
mjazzg Posted February 28, 2019 Report Posted February 28, 2019 Masahiko Togashi - Spiritual Nature [East West] Rod Levitt Orchestra - Forty-Second Street [RCA Victor] Ornette Coleman - Prime Design/Time Design [Caravan Of Dreams Productions] Quote
mikeweil Posted February 28, 2019 Report Posted February 28, 2019 Comparing my pristine condition 1960's Pacifici Jazz LP with the recent Japanese CD resissue - both really sound different. The LP has a more natural balance and dynamics, the CD has the higher frequencies boosted up and the piano less audible in the mix - strange. I'll stick with my LP. Now spinning Herbie Mann - I still know exactly where I bought this LP! This band had a serious groove going! Quote

Looking at them again I realise they are all titles I purchased either directly or indirectly because of posts on this board. So there was a connection. Edited February 28, 2019 by mjazzg Quote
Clunky Posted February 28, 2019 Report Posted February 28, 2019 I’m afraid I ditched the Rod Levitt album pictured. I had to say goodbye to around 100 LPs in a vain attempt to keep the collection under control. It’s not bad by any means but didn’t grab me enough. Quote
mjazzg Posted February 28, 2019 Report Posted February 28, 2019 It's not the strongest of the four I have but it still has its moments, quite a few of them. I fear a cull is imminent here too unless I plan to sleep on or eat off LPs Quote

paul secor Posted February 28, 2019 Report Posted February 28, 2019 I only have the Riverside (OJC) Levitt. I like it enough that I'd like to hear the RCAs. Quote
