porcy62 Posted February 26, 2019 Report Posted February 26, 2019 360 stereo pressing but mono recording I think. Quote
jeffcrom Posted February 26, 2019 Report Posted February 26, 2019 Charles Mingus - Wonderland (Solid State). The 1969 issue of this outstanding 1959 concert. Quote
mjazzg Posted February 26, 2019 Report Posted February 26, 2019 Dave Liebman/Tatsuya Nakatina/Adam Rudolph - The Unknowable [RareNoise] first of two new Liebman's on RareNoise Records (the other has Hamid Drake instead of Nakatina). This one is beautifully recorded. Rudolph's live processing really adds to the overall effect. As a Liebman agnostic this was a bit of a risk but I'm pleased I took it Quote

HutchFan Posted February 26, 2019 Report Posted February 26, 2019 (edited) Now spinning: McCoy Tyner - Passion Dance (Milestone, 1979) with Ron Carter & Tony Williams I wish McCoy would've recorded more with Tony. I think they're supremely well-suited to each other. Tyner is one of the few pianists/musicians whose drive and power is every bit the equal of Williams'. But IIRC their only collaborations are Passion Dance, Counterpoints (a companion disc from the same concert), and Supertrios. Am I missing anything? Edited February 26, 2019 by HutchFan Quote
HutchFan Posted February 26, 2019 Report Posted February 26, 2019 On to the second disc from the same concert: My version of this is actually a CD, not an LP -- but I'm posting it here for continuity's sake. Quote
jeffcrom Posted February 27, 2019 Report Posted February 27, 2019 Max Roach/Archie Shepp - Force (Uniteledis) Quote
paul secor Posted February 27, 2019 Report Posted February 27, 2019 Reading Joachim-Ernst Berendt's liner notes, I came across: "The most fluent of the early jazz clarinet players was not the overrated Sidney Bechet, but Albert Nicholas …." Leaving Albert Nicholas aside, the "overrated" comment about Sidney Bechet is one of the most ignorant things I've ever read (even granting that Bechet's main horn was soprano). I stopped reading the notes at that point. Quote

The "Captain Marvel" band live in 1972. I don't believe this has ever been issued in the US, except in video form on a DVD with really awful sound. I bought this record in a little record shop near Lila Torg (Little Square) in Malmö , Sweden. Quote
jeffcrom Posted February 27, 2019 Report Posted February 27, 2019 Now for something completely different: Sly & the Family Stone - Greatest Hits (Epic). I haven't listened to Sly in years, but just found this near-mint LP, and I'm having a blast spinning it. Quote

mjazzg Posted February 27, 2019 Report Posted February 27, 2019 (edited) The Joe Daley Trio - At Newport '63 [RCA Victor] first listen to today's arrival. Purchased simply because I've read so much about it on this board over the last few years and thought I'd better see what all the fuss was about! Edited February 27, 2019 by mjazzg Quote
