paul secor
Beautiful solos by Fats and a couple of very fine vocals by Kay Penton, a Billie influenced vocalist who seems to have recorded from the mid 40s to the mid 50s and then disappeared. paul secor
The one time I heard Albert Ayler play live, it was with this band (Junie Booth replacing Alan Silva) in the spring of 1968. As I recall, they played some of the tunes from this album, but as medleys, rather than individual tunes. To my ears, that was more effective, but I guess Impulse decided that the record would be more commercial if the tunes were separated. paul secor
I was talking with a friend who's a very good listener about Jaki Byard recently, and we agreed that we both enjoy Mr. Byard more as a solo pianist than when he's playing with a band. JSngry
Same, on all counts, "Universal Indians" in particular...the vocal, so direct, so obvious, as to be scary unless taken totally "as is", and then,,,it's all good then. But not until!

paul secor
One of the songs on this record, "Don't Mess Around with My Love", was written by Matthew Gee - I assume that's the trombonist.
