Allan Songer
I just read that Sonny Simmons has formed a trio and has been playing in New York this month. Would love to see him make a trip to Los Angeles! Anyway, I was spinning this late last night before heading to bed and NO, I did NOT have any nightmares--even after heard Barbara Donald's trumpet at full tilt! No nightmares? That's because you weren't spinning side 2 of the Smiley Winters on Arhoolie! That's some freaky shit... NICE! I ran into Sonny Simmons on the street in San Francisco about 20 years ago blowin the SHIT out of his alto right in front of the BART station downtown--maybe Montgomery St? Playing for loose change. ALL Ellington is worthy of reissue. You just don't need to buy them all.

Yes -- this one probably would have never been "on my radar" if it hadn't just been reissued by Mosaic. And I suppose that's the problem with reissues in general -- trying to sort out what's "essential" vs. what's just interesting or "overdue". However, I am intrigued by this "small group" session. Should be a nice contrast to most of the other Ellington stuff I already have.

I owned several performance of Beethoven's 9 symphony, but I never found again the thrill I had when I heard it live at Royal Albert Hall with London Symphony Orchestra conducted by Tennstedt, let's say 15 years ago. Damn! I am ageing.
