sidewinder Posted March 4, 2006 Report Posted March 4, 2006 (edited) Next on deck:- Tony Crombie and His Men 'Atmosphere' (UK Columbia mono). A rare late-50s LP with Tubby Hayes and Ronnie Scott. Can't believe I picked it up for the grand total of £2.50. The flimsy cover is pretty trashed but the vinyl is bordering near-mint, heavy vinyl sound is superb. I have a spare 1980's reissue sleeve so I'm sorted with this one. Edited March 5, 2006 by sidewinder Quote

patricia Posted March 5, 2006 Report Posted March 5, 2006 (edited) Vol 3 Then Came Swing - The History Of Jazz- on Capitol compilation includes The International Jazzmen Benny Goodman Al Casey and his Sextet Rex Stewart's Big Eight Big Sid Catlett's Band This is a 10" LP that was recorded in 1940 and the music stands up really well. Then, another 10" LP, Sarah Vaughan Sings - MGM label Track list: My Kind Of Love Body And Soul I Don't Stand A Ghost Of A Chance With You I've Got A Crush On You You're Blase' A Hundred Years From Today You're Not The Kind I Can Make You Love Me Very nice. sidewinder Posted March 5, 2006 Report Posted March 5, 2006 The Indo-Jazzmen 'Ragas and Reflections' (Saga stereo). Currified version of 'God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen' on side 2. Far out ! Similar band to the Curried Jazz LP? Not sure ! The only musicians credited on the sleeve are Krishna Kumar (tabla) and Tara (Tambura) Kapur on sitar. The session includes the indian group with bass and drums plus front line of alto/flute and flugel horn. The alto/flute could be Ray Swinfield. The flugel doesn't sound like Kenny Wheeler - my guess is it's Harry Beckett. Both this and the 'Curried Jazz' LPs are mentioned as 'cash ins' on the Mayer/Harriott fusion albums and were both put out on real cheapo labels (Saga in the case of 'Ragas' and MFP in the case of 'Curried Jazz'). The Saga pressing though sounds truly excellent - and its in heavy vinyl. Quote

The Carla Bley Band on Watt 1982, Five Birds And A Monk, on Galaxy recorded 1978. I have about a 1000 vinyl LPs. Quote

I have beautiful memories of going to Scotts, original club 39, Gerrard Street, Soho, I used to go to the all night jazz sessions which started about midnight on a saturday. Ronnie and Tubby played their hearts out. I dont think tubby ever got the credit he deserved. I would recomend to you two vinyls I have aquired reasently, Tubby Hayes, On The Air on Harkit Records also tubby Hayes Introducing Tubbs. He was great on tenor but he was so good on flute,. vibes and anything else he wanted to play. A great talent, sadly missed. The funny thing is I went to the alnight session to see the americans.
